Why is September 7 #WorldFieldEpidemiologyDay?

On Sep 7 1854, John Snow’s now-famous investigation of the Broad Street cholera outbreak led to the removal of the handle of the offending water pump

#FETP fellows & alumni are the #diseasedetective s of today

Tomorrow is #WorldFieldEpidemiologyDay
Collectively, #FETP trainees have conducted more than 9,350 outbreak investigations and established or evaluated more than 3,800 disease surveillance systems since the FETP initiative began in 1975.

From 21-26 Dec, twenty fireworks-related injury cases were reported to our national sentinel surveillance system. This was similar to the number of cases reported during the same time period last year. Of the cases, 19 (95%) were male. Median age was 10 years old. Twelve (60%) cases were actively involved. Fourteen (70%) injuries occurred at home. Four (20%) cases were admitted. #LigtasChristmas #fireworks #FETP #epitwitter #epidemiology
From Dec. 21-25, five fireworks-related injuries were reported to our national sentinel surveillance system. That is 50% lower compared to the same time period last year. Hopefully the downward trend continues! Iwasan ang paputok para sa #LigtasChristmas ! #FETP #epidemiology #publichealth
Today marks the start of our annual Fireworks-Related Injury (FWRI) sentinel surveillance! Last year, we recorded 188 injuries due to fireworks and 1 stray bullet injury. Hopefully there will be less (or even zero!) injuries this year. Iwasan ang paputok para sa ligtas na Christmas! #IwasPaputok #FETP #epidemiology
So grateful to be attending #ESCAIDE2022 in person to present a poster summarising the 2nd largest #foodborne #outbreak in the ACT’s history. It has been a great three days meeting #FETP and applied Epidemiology colleagues from Europe and across the world. You can find out more about the outbreak here: https://www1.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/8FA6078276359430CA257BF0001A4C42/$File/donuts_for_weight_loss_a_norovirus_outbreak_associated_with_a_bakery_in_the_australian_capital_territory.pdf
