NYPD officer lands $175K settlement over 'courtesy cards' that help drivers get out of traffic stops

A New York City police officer has reached a $175,000 settlement with the city in his lawsuit that illuminated the use of the “courtesy cards” that officers dole out to friends and relatives to get out of traffic stops and other minor infractions. The deal brings an end to a lawsuit brought last year by Officer Mathew Bianchi that claimed he was punished by his superiors for failing to honor the cards, though the settlement itself makes no substantive changes to how the cards are used by NYPD officers. The Staten Island-based officer said he was ousted from his job in the traffic unit and moved to a night patrol shift after he issued a ticket to a friend of the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed officer.

New York City plans to wipe out $2 billion in medical debt for 500,000 residents

New York City Mayor Eric Adams says the city intends to wipe out more than $2 billion in medical debt for up to 500,000 residents. The city is working with RIP Medical Debt, a nonprofit that buys medical debt in bulk from hospitals and debt collectors for pennies on the dollar. Under the program, the city will spend $18 million over three years. The mayor said medical debt is the No. 1 cause of bankruptcy in the United States. He called the debt relief program the largest municipal initiative of its kind in the country, though RIP Medical Debt has worked with other municipalities.

New York police will use drones to monitor backyard parties this weekend, spurring privacy concerns

Those attending outdoor parties or barbecues in New York City this weekend may find an uninvited guest looming over their festivities: a police drone. The New York City police department plans to pilot the unmanned aircrafts over large gatherings in an effort to enhance security over Labor Day weekend. Assistant NYPD Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said the drones will be used to check in on complaints about a “large crowd, a large party in a backyard." The move drew immediate complaints from privacy advocates, who say the city must establish clear rules around drone surveillance.
