Even more moisture is forecasted for Monday with increasing chances of wetting rain. Overall, fire behavior will be limited to creeping and smoldering with the arrival of monsoonal moisture. Smaller fuels will not be as receptive to fire spread, but large diameter fuels are still very dry and areas under mixed conifer stands are not seeing as much precipitation and will continue to burn.

An area has been identified to put in contingency dozerline south of Taylor Mesa Lake pushing towards the canyon rim to connect with containment line constructed by the Stoner Group.

Stoner Group: Handcrews finished the section of handline in the Pipe Creek area yesterday. On the east side of Stoner Creek, a line has been flagged to connect with dozerline on Taylor Mesa and, weather dependent, construction will begin today. A chipper will start working along CR 40 to chip the large amount of brush that was cleared out from around residences in the area. Crews completed installation of pumps, sprinklers, and hose and tested them to ensure they were in working order, in the event they are needed.

Structure Groups: Crews moved along CR 38 checking pumps, sprinklers and hoses to ensure that they were operational and in safe locations with anticipated rising water levels in the creeks due to rainfall. Crews completed structure assessments and preparation around structures near Hwy 145.

Weather and Fire Behavior: We will see additional showers and thunderstorms again today developing around noon and continuing through 4pm, with lingering showers through midnight. Potential for lightning and gusty outflow winds of 15-25 mph exists with these storms.

Crews plan to construct a contingency line by thinning brush and trees from the Stoner Mesa Road west of the division break. A small section of handline connecting the Stoner Mesa Road to CR 38 to complete the contingency line is planned for today.

Division T: Crews continue mop up work on the east end of the division using the large hose lay they established yesterday. A chipper will be working in the division today to clear piles of brush resulting from fire line construction and will be doing chipping operations for the next few shifts. An excavator is moving to the division to start on suppression repair work. Crews made significant progress on the concentrated areas of heat near the end of the 545.D road

Division X: Dozerline construction of primary and secondary containment lines is complete and the dozers are moving off the division to other areas where they are needed. Mop up continues along the primary containment line along Stoner Mesa Trail moving south to where the line ties in with the canyon rim. A remote spike camp is in place on Stoner Mesa and is being supported by aircraft in the mornings when the weather allows for flying.

Division W: Crews finished building the secondary contingency line that runs from the fire’s edge near Fox Den Reservoir, along the canyon rim and connecting back into the 202 road.

Morning update from Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1

Size: 10,233 acres
Containment: 41%

Special Note: A community meeting will be held today, Sunday, August 24th at 6 pm at the Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave, Dolores, CO 81323.

Current Situation: Fire activity was mostly limited to creeping and smoldering yesterday, although the Stoner Creek drainage still had active fire behavior due to morning direct sun and cloudless skies. Fire activity decreased with the arrival of thunderstorms and rainfall in the early afternoon. Overnight relative humidity recovery was high, and firefighters will see additional precipitation over the fire area for the next several days. Fire suppression activities over the coming days will be weather dependent with crews only working in areas that can be safely accessed.

Division A/E: Firefighters are using UAS (unmanned aerial systems) with IR (infrared) heat detecting technology in their mop up efforts and to keep an eye on the east side of the division. IR flights are still detecting isolated areas of heat near the control line in Division A, and firefighters are working to mop those up and further secure the fire perimeter.

Fire operations are going as planned. The Stoner Creek drainage is showing the most active behavior and crews are working on primary containment lines as well as secondary lines. A helicopter is being used to drop water on the spot fire on the east side of the drainage.

The Stoner Mesa Fire has grown to 2,156 acres after increased activity yesterday.

With Red Flag Warnings in effect today, expect:

• More fire response vehicles on SH 145 and County Road 38.

• Additional fire activity this afternoon.

• Smoke in the area.
