Having been accessing my mother’s bank and building society accounts as her Attorney (she put in olace LPAs for finances and also health and care years ago) due to her seriously ill health, it has struck me just how awful some organisations are. They should realise how difficult it is for an LPA to be enacted and aim to assist (usually) relatives at a very very challenging time. #banking #LPA #DistanceCarer #IllHealth #MentalIncapacity

After a very unsettling week, i am back home dealing with menial chores. Washing load #1 is on the line. Second load is in the machine. I’m going to try to ignore the rest.

Thankfully mum has had a good night. Is settled and pleased to be back at the home. #ElderCare #DistanceCarer

(All it took was an email from the care home to put my mind at ease. Shame the NHS doesn’t have a joined up means of imparting info to patients and families. On mum’s ward they used both paper records and digital handsets… but had to transcribe the info!)

Finally my mum made it back to her care home. After many hours sitting in a ‘discharge lounge’ where they didn’t know about her steroid dependency … but thankfully they did do as I asked at 5pm, re her meds, and “also gave her something to eat”. I do #LoveTheNHS but sometimes I despair at the things my poor mum is subjected to. #ElderCare #DistanceCarer
63 phone calls made to the hospital, all bar two engaged or left to ring out… but I finally have an update re mum. She *may* be discharged today. 🤞they manage it at a decent time if it happens. #elderCare #distanceCarer
Yesterday was a busy, unsuccessful, day re mum’s medical situation. Was variously told no way could she be discharged, then was waiting for transport and then that she’d had a fall on the ward so not being discharged. Amazingly she seems physically uninjured but cognitively her deline is even more rapid. Hallucinations remain. Yesterday she had my dad (who died in 1993) sitting next to her and was most put out when I declined her offer to talk to him! #elderCare #DistanceCarer
Health update re mum. She had 5 falls in 6 days last week. Was eventually admitted to hospital … and after some considerable waiting has been diagnosed with “an old L3 fracture” (found on a CT scan from last June, ie already old then) but no one knew/told her or us. She’s on bedrest, morphine and very unwell. No discharge to care home or nursing home seems possible so pretty grim for all. #elderCare #DistanceCarer

Mum no longer testing positive for Covid… but has another fall overnight. Awaiting paramedics who i hope will call me to discuss.

Darn it. Mum’s tested positive for Covid. Knew it was too good to last once the care home had an outbreak.

Morning’s first batch of carer admin dealt with. Would really help if financial and other organisations provided decent support to those registering an LPA with them. Each has their own process and, at a very stressful time, it’s hugely challenging to navigate.
