Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, 5/26/2024. The current lighthouse was built in 1835 and still has the fourth-order Fresnel lens that was installed in 1856. The lighthouse and grounds are well maintained, and easily accessible to the public — and clearly a very popular spot. The lighthouse is beautifully framed by dramatic ledges of metamorphic and igneous rock. We could have spent hours here — it was simply stunning. Unfortunately, several of the structures on the grounds were badly damaged by storms the previous winter.

Curtis Island Lighthouse, 5/25/2024. The current lighthouse was built in 1896. It is currently owned by the town of Camden. These photos were taken from a spot that has been designated as an area specifically for viewing this lighthouse. It is wonderful that a public access area exists to view it. So many lighthouses are not accessible or even viewable to the public. I wish more locales would do what Camden, Maine has done to make this historical structure freely viewable.

Owl’s Head Lighthouse, 5/25/2024. Visited this lighthouse on an impromptu trip to Maine last year. Little did we know that they had just opened for the season that day, but we got there *just* too late to catch a tour. We even went back the next day, but missed it then too. Bummer! Anyway, despite missing the tour, this was still a really fun lighthouse to visit. It’s perched high up overlooking the ocean, and the view is incredible! If you’re into ghost stories, there are apparently many involving this lighthouse.

I don’t believe in ghosts (I’m no fun, I get it), but I do like pets. The last picture is the grave marker of Spot, who was the light keeper’s dog who served from 1930 to 1945, and according to www.lighthousefriends.com (such a great resource), would ring the fog bell anytime a ship would go by - and the ships knew to ring their fog bell or sound their horn in response. Which is awesome. RIP Spot!

Cape Elizabeth Lighthouses, Cape Elizabeth, Maine, 4/11/2024. These twin lights were both built in 1874. I visited Two Lights State Park once before, many, many years ago, and I recall it was difficult to get a good view of either of them. It’s even more overgrown today, and the lighthouses are now not visible at all from the park; but you can get a fine view (of the east tower at least) at the end of Two Lights Road. The east tower is widely familiar, thanks to Edward Hopper’s paintings, most notably “The Lighthouse at Two Lights.” It is still in use as an active aid to navigation and the optic is maintained by the USCG. The residence is privately owned. The west tower was discontinued as a lighthouse in 1924. During WWII the lantern room was removed and the tower was converted into a lookout post. The west tower and residence are now both privately owned.

Photos:

3.) The decommissioned west light, now used as a fire lookout, viewed from Two Lights Terrace. Kinda reminds me of an Imperial Stormtrooper from Star Wars 🤷🏻‍♂️

Bug Light, South Portland, Maine, 4/11/2024. Another stop on my overnight in Portland last spring. This lighthouse’s style is so unique, and it’s so accessible — I don’t know any others quite like it. I do wish they would install a stronger optic though — the one it currently has is pretty weak: she deserves better.

Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, South Portland, Maine, 4/11/2024. Took these on a quick overnight trip last year. I need to get back when they start doing tours this season!
