#Romania is hosting the Aegis Ashore system at Deveselu. Known locally as the missile defence "shield", it is specifically built for intercepting Iranian missile strikes on US assets, and a potential target for Iranian retaliatory strikes.

Retired Romanian General Virgil Bălăceanu states, "the shield doesn't protect us, we're protecting the shield".

Romania finds itself in a pickle, providing territory, labour, and legal cover for US power projection in an attempt to curry favour with Washington and NATO, against a genuine threat from Russia.

It is now forced to grapple with potential strikes on its territory, but has no material basis from which it can articulate an independent position: Romania is thoroughly integrated into NATO patronage networks, US security guarantees, and EU funding conditionalities.
