DEDHAM, Mass. (AP) — "One baby Jesus lays in a manger in the snow, wrapped in a silver emergency blanket with his wrists zip-tied. Mary stands nearby outside the #LakeStreetChurch in #EvanstonIL, wearing a plastic gas mask and flanked by #RomanSoldiers in tactical vests labeled 'ICE.'
"In another #Chicago suburb, not far from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility that has drawn protests over detentions, a sign at the manger outside the #UrbanVillageChurch says 'Due to ICE activity in our community the Holy Family is in hiding.' And more than a thousand miles away, the Christ child went missing from a Nativity scene at St. Susanna Parish in #DedhamMa, replaced by a hand-painted sign: 'ICE was here.' "

At St. Susanna Parish in Dedham, Massachusetts, the manger sits empty, beneath a sign reading “ICE was here.” Supporters say Jesus, Mary and Joseph were refugees, comparing them to immigrant communities facing federal raids. Critics call the displays political and sacrilegious. The controversy has drawn visitors, protests, and heightened church scrutiny. But supporters say the Bible is on their side.

"A decision is expected today on a controversial 'ICE was here' nativity scene at a Dedham, Massachusetts church.
"The display outside St. Susanna's Parish has the anti-ICE message where Jesus, Mary and Joseph would normally be, suggesting that they were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. It was installed the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
"The Boston Archdiocese wants it taken down, saying the display goes against church norms around sacred objects.
'The people of God have the right to expect that, when they come to church, they will encounter genuine opportunities for prayer and Catholic worship-not divisive political messaging,' the Archdiocese's message read in part. 'The display should be removed, and the manger restored to its proper sacred purpose.'
"The church's priest Father Stephen Josoma declined an on-camera interview with WBZ-TV, but said the church is continuing to speak on humanitarian issues facing the country. "
