The ā€œdata-freeā€ messaging app MoyaApp, which already has six million active monthly users in South Africa, is working hard to become as big as WhatsApp in the country.

When an app or website is #datafree it means NO DATA is taken from your airtime or data bundle balance. Apart from instant and group chat, you can read news, get live soccer scores, browse Wikipedia, check the weather, communicate with government services and much more.

Lentell talks about the history of MoyaApp, how it’s able to offer ā€œdata-freeā€ messaging to people who don’t have data or airtime, and why he believes this is a winning proposition in a country where Meta Platforms-owned WhatsApp has become entrenched.

Messaging app Moya has 3.5 million daily active users and 6.5 million monthly active users in South Africa, developer Datafree has announced. Datafree CEO Gour Lentell has also told MyBroadband that the app has consistently ranked in the top 5 most downloaded applications on the Google Play store in South Africa for several weeks.

What sets Moya apart from its competitors is that it doesn’t consume your mobile data but relies on reverse-billing agreements with MTN, Vodacom, Telkom, and Cell C.

According to Datafree, Moya lets you send messages and voice notes, and offers access to several other services without paying for the data. The company said that Moya works on the supported networks even when you have no airtime or data balance.

Messages are stated to be end-to-end encrypted but users should be aware there may be some metadata being shared based on this statement in the Privacy Policy: "You share your information as you use and communicate through the Moya Apps and/or our Services, and we share your information to help us operate, provide, improve, understand, customise, support, and market our Services. If we share your Personal Information with any third party, we will only do so in compliance with the POPI Act and we will ensure that anyone to whom we pass your Personal Information agrees to treat your Personal Information with the same level of protection as we are obliged to.".

Veedo Live is a South African video conferencing solution built on open source Jitsi with reverse billing to an organisation for #datafree access

A great idea borne in Africa where end-users have mobile devices but not sufficient data plans to support the Internet connectivity costs. The access can be reverse billed to the organisation (paid for by their organisation). It comes from the same idea behind the Moya messenger which is data free on most South African cellular networks.

Moya Messenger App was always #datafree on South African and Nigerian networks to stay in contact with families

It's worth remembering that Moya Messenger for Android is still around and still providing data free messaging (as well as to some websites like Wikipedia, weather, and some government sites) even when a phone user has zero airtime or data balance. You may have data but someone else may need to contact you without data so it is well worth installing.
In South Africa it is data free on MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Telkom and in Nigeria on MTN and Airtel.

Moya Messenger App for Android can work after pre-paid data is exhausted in South Africa on MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Telkom and Nigeria on MTN and Airtel

Unlimited text chat and group text chats even if your data has run out. It should be installed as a backup for anyone on pre-paid data in SA so that you are available also to others who may need to use it.
I was reminded of this app yesterday when my wife messaged me on it as she had run out of pre-paid call time and urgently needed a top-up sent over the air - she could still reach me using Moya.
Yes, no app for iPhone and you do need to be on one of these networks, and you cannot send attachments or voice notes on zero data.

Moya Messenger - Zero-rated WhatsApp rival launched in South Africa

A new, South African-developed rival to WhatsApp, which offers zero-rated data access on South Africa’s four largest mobile operators, has been launched. Called Moya Messenger, the app, which was developed by a company called biNu, works even when users have no airtime or data on their smartphones. Moya Messenger was built using ā€œproven, industry standard open-source messaging technology and adaptedā€ for zero-rated data

This is something we really need. A messenger that is usable by the poorest of the poor and other pre-paid users where their data runs out but they still need to communicate. Although the zero rating is unique to South African networks I can see something like this taking off in 3rd world and developing countries. It could counter some of WhatsApp's steamroller effect over other instant messaging networks and create more balance.

Some catches though:
* It does not have all the bells and whistles of WhatsApp, Telegram, etc (yet)
* Only text messaging / group chat is zero-rated, and videos, photos and media files will use or work with normal paid data or when connected to WiFi. Before sending you will be warned you need mobile data or WiFi.
* It is funded through video advertising but the benefit is more than a free app/service, it is also free data for texting (the ads don't use paid data)
* It is Android only for now (let's hope iOS still follows) because the receiver may be an iOS user
* Users will need a South African SIM card from one of the 4 participating networks (MTN, Vodacom, Cell C or Telkom)
