There are two types of Teslas: those that are on fire and those that will be on fire. Teslas are, in the words that Ralph Nader used before the first Tesla was invented: "Unsafe at any speed." My guess is that Musk thought he could behave as destructively as he wanted to be, and no one would cause him some of the discomfort that he caused so very many other people.
