There is an assumption that the prior behaviour of Covid-19, that it comes in waves, will continue into the future.

If multiple variants came into circulation, where infection with one variant provided little protection against infection with another variant then the base-line population infection rate could rise.

This rise could initially be interpretted as the start of another wave.
