Relevant history lesson for folks and I am not going to defend Iran's ayatollah, but we are in this actual mess cause of the British and US imperialism in the 1950s. Iran had a sectarian government before the US/British Coup, because that leader created social security, taxed the rich and nationalized the oil industry that Britain took. Nationalizing industry is not a crime, but war is.

#Documentary / Coup 53: CIA and MI6 overthrow of Iran’s budding Democracy in 1953

In 1953, the #CIA and #MI6 orchestrated a covert operation to overthrow #Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad #Mosaddegh after he nationalized the oil industry, threatening Western corporate interests.

The 2019 documentary “Coup 53” by Iranian filmmaker Taghi Amirani exposes this historic betrayal of democracy using never-before-seen archival footage and documents. The film features Ralph Fiennes reading transcripts from MI6 agent Norman Darbyshire, who admitted involvement in the coup plot.

This wasn’t just regime change - it was the blueprint for decades of U.S. covert operations worldwide. The coup installed the autocratic Shah, whose brutal rule lasted until the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

The documentary proves what many suspected: democratic governments mean nothing in the context of Western imperialism when they threaten corporate profits or regional interests.

@breadandcircuses

they were a democracy till the US helped the British install a dictatorship in 1953 (see #Coup53 documentary). they only have an Islamic govt there as a reaction to that. and now that they are trying to get a nuclear power program up and running (which would let them become less reliant on fossil fuels), we refuse to believe they are not pursuing a bomb. ugh.

From Democracy Now!

“We look at the 70th anniversary of the August 19, 1953, U.S.- and U.K-backed coup in Iran, which took place two years after Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh nationalized Iran’s oil industry that had been controlled by the company now known as British Petroleum.”
