Commuter train fares to rise for the more well off riders, government to set different prices from 2023

Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi announced that while the price of the average KRL or commuter train tickets will not rise, people who are more well off can expect to pay more as the government plans to redirect subsidies only to those who need them.

The plan is said to involve differentiated cards to determine how much a passenger will pay for a train ride. How they plan to make it work remains to be seen.

A commuter train ride today costs Rp3,500 but with the new scheme, more affluent passengers can expect to pay a desubsidized fare of Rp10,000 or Rp15,000 for the same ride.

While the government claims that this is to ensure a more equitable application of subsidies, they are also planning to subsidize electric and hybrid vehicles up to Rp80 million for cars and up to Rp8 million for motorcycles for being "more environmentally friendly" than ICE cars.

Consumer rights groups are appalled at the apparent disconnect between the provision of subsidies for train tickets and personal vehicles.

Tulus Abadi of YLKI said the government should thank and reward members of the middle class who are willing to use public transport, not punish them with higher fares. By implementing discriminatory fares for train rides, the government is effectively discouraging the use of public transport.
