Councillors unanimously voted against the Ffos-y-fran opencast coal mine application. But still they're mining coal illegally. Merthyr Tydfil County Borough should immediately issue a 'Temporary Stop Notice'.

No more ifs, no more buts - shut it down!

The Council is stalling, delaying, and evading enforcement action to shut down Ffos-y-fran opencast coal mine - the UK's largest. This inaction has already allowed 8 months of illicit coal mining, making the Council responsible for around 270,000 tonnes of coal, adding 840,000 tonnes of CO2 to our climate crisis. Demand this ends NOW with the immediate issue of a 'Temporary Stop Notice'. No more excuses.

The things that we can see through the work that we’ve taken on coal, that are equally relevant in other contexts are that communities that resist coal mines or resist extractivist projects are much more successful when the community works together.

Just back from the #CumbrianCoalMine protest in #Whitehaven. Spoke to many folk and discovered there’s more common ground than we might think.

I’m sure some cracks have been healed today between those for and against the coalmine — not least as locals seem to want *jobs* more than the coalmine itself.

All-in-all, empowering and thought-provoking.

I’ve made sound recordings too, which I’ll share soon…stay tuned!
