I have really been enjoying this podcast for a few months now. It’s a Christian father and son combination (with the father being an MD and expert in medical ethics) discussing ethics around medical, scientific, and technological aspects of 21st century life.

Modern financial culture often frames success as accumulation. Growth is measured by size, speed, and visibility. In this framing, more is always better, and faster is always smarter. Stewardship offers a quieter and more durable alternative.

Stewardship begins with responsibility rather than ambition. It asks how resources are used, not how impressively they are displayed. Within Christian moral teaching, stewardship emphasizes care, accountability, and purpose. Resources are treated as tools to be managed wisely, not trophies to be collected.

This perspective changes how saving is understood. Saving is not an act of withdrawal from life, nor a signal of fear. It is a deliberate choice to prepare for obligations that are known and those that cannot yet be predicted. Stewardship accepts uncertainty and responds with preparation rather than denial.

Regular, modest saving reinforces this ethic. The practice does not rely on exceptional income or favorable conditions. It relies on consistency. Over time, stewardship expressed through saving creates resilience. It reduces reliance on credit and limits exposure to sudden disruption.

Stewardship also resists the pressure to equate financial worth with personal value. Accumulation invites comparison. Stewardship invites discernment. It allows individuals to evaluate choices based on function and necessity rather than status or imitation.

This approach does not condemn prosperity. It places it in context. Prosperity is treated as stability, flexibility, and the capacity to meet responsibilities without panic. These outcomes rarely require excess. They require attention, discipline, and restraint.

In uncertain economic conditions, stewardship offers clarity. It redirects focus from accumulation to management and from spectacle to sustainability. Practiced consistently, it supports a form of prosperity measured not by growth alone, but by readiness and responsibility.

The Maranatha Empire

There is a prayer so holy that it should burn the tongue of every empire that tries to speak it.

Maranatha.

Come, Lord.

It is the cry of the small church under pressure. The cry of the persecuted and the patient. The cry of those who have no armies to summon, no throne to defend, no voting bloc sufficient to save them, no market share large enough to secure their future. It is the cry of those who wait because they know they are not God.

But in every age, there are those who take this prayer of waiting and turn it into a banner of possession.

They say, “Come, Lord,” but what they mean is, “Give us control.”

They say, “Thy kingdom come,” but what they mean is, “Let our faction rule.”

They say, “Prepare the way of the Lord,” but what they build are prisons, borders, propaganda machines, religious celebrity platforms, and monuments to their own fear.

This is the Maranatha Empire.

It is not one nation only, though nations may become its servants. It is not one denomination only, though denominations may become its chapels. It is not merely Rome, nor Geneva, nor Washington, nor Moscow, nor any other city that has mistaken power for providence. The Maranatha Empire is the recurring temptation of the religious heart: to stop waiting for Christ and begin replacing him.

It begins quietly.

It begins with concern.

The world is dangerous. The children are vulnerable. The church is shrinking. The enemies are multiplying. The culture is changing. The old certainties are crumbling. The people are afraid.

Fear, when baptized, often calls itself faithfulness.

So the frightened church begins to reach for tools Jesus refused.

A throne.

A sword.

A spectacle.

A scapegoat.

A strongman.

A law that can accomplish what love has not yet persuaded.

A state that can enforce what the Spirit has not yet formed.

A leader who promises to defend Christ, as though Christ ever asked Peter to keep swinging after Gethsemane.

This is how the prayer becomes an empire.

The early church cried, “Come, Lord Jesus,” because it knew that Caesar was not Lord. The Maranatha Empire cries, “Come, Lord Jesus,” because it wants Caesar to become useful.

The early church broke bread in homes. The Maranatha Empire builds platforms and calls them altars.

The early church welcomed the stranger. The Maranatha Empire sees the stranger as a threat.

The early church died rather than kill. The Maranatha Empire kills and calls the dead collateral damage in the defense of righteousness.

The early church believed the Lamb had conquered. The Maranatha Empire keeps looking for a beast strong enough to protect the Lamb.

And there is the blasphemy.

Not that empire rejects Christ outright. That would be too honest. The Maranatha Empire does something more dangerous. It uses Christ as decoration for a power that is fundamentally afraid of the cross.

It sings of the Lamb while trusting the dragon.

It preaches resurrection while organizing itself around survival.

It displays the cross while despising weakness.

It quotes Jesus while ignoring the people Jesus told us to notice: the poor, the imprisoned, the hungry, the foreigner, the enemy, the child, the wounded man beside the road.

The Maranatha Empire is not built by atheists. It is built by believers who have lost patience with the way of Jesus.

For the way of Jesus is slow.

It is seed, yeast, salt, light.

It is foot-washing.

It is forgiveness seventy times seven.

It is refusing the shortcut of domination even when domination appears efficient.

It is telling Peter to put away the sword when everything in Peter’s body screams that this is the moment for holy violence.

It is standing before Pilate and saying, “My kingdom is not from this world,” not because the kingdom has nothing to do with the world, but because it does not come by the world’s methods.

The Maranatha Empire cannot tolerate this.

It cannot tolerate a Messiah who will not seize power.

It cannot tolerate a church that would rather be faithful than influential.

It cannot tolerate a people whose politics begin at the basin and towel.

It cannot tolerate enemy-love, because enemy-love ruins the machinery. Empire requires enemies. It needs them. It feeds on them. Without enemies, the crowd might look too closely at the throne.

So, the Maranatha Empire manufactures urgency.

There is no time to love.

No time to listen.

No time to discern.

No time for reconciliation.

No time for peacemaking.

No time to ask whether the means resemble the Christ we claim to serve.

The hour is late, they say. The danger is great. The stakes are too high. We must act now. We must take control now. We must win now.

And somewhere beneath all that urgency is a terrible confession:

They do not actually believe the Lord is coming.

Or, if he is coming, they do not trust him to arrive in the right way.

So they build him an empire to inherit.

But Christ does not inherit empires.

He judges them.

He walks in alleyways, not palaces. He asks whether the churches have kept their first love. He warns those who are rich and comfortable and self-satisfied that they may be poor, blind, and naked. He stands at the door and knocks, not because he has been defeated by secularism, but because religious people have locked him outside while holding meetings in his name.

The Maranatha Empire is always shocked when Jesus is found outside the gate.

Outside the camp.

Outside respectability.

Outside the approved narrative.

Outside the walls with the crucified, the excluded, the unclean, the inconvenient, and the condemned.

The empire expected him in the capital.

But he is with the refugees.

The empire expected him in the cathedral of victory.

But he is with the mother of the disappeared.

The empire expected him on the reviewing stand.

But he is washing feet in the basement.

The empire expected him to bless the troops.

But he is asking why his followers are still carrying swords.

This is why Maranatha must remain a dangerous prayer.

It must never be allowed to become a slogan for conquest. It must never be printed on the banners of those who are unwilling to be converted by the One they summon. To pray “Come, Lord” is not to invite divine endorsement of our projects. It is to invite judgment upon them.

Come, Lord, and judge our churches.

Come, Lord, and judge our flags.

Come, Lord, and judge our markets.

Come, Lord, and judge our weapons.

Come, Lord, and judge our sermons.

Come, Lord, and judge our secret hatreds.

Come, Lord, and judge the ways we have used your name to avoid your way.

This is the prayer empire cannot honestly pray.

Because if the Lord comes, the first thing to fall may not be our enemies.

It may be our idols.

The algorithm.

The nation.

The party.

The brand.

The gun.

The strongman.

The myth of innocence.

The lie that we can harm others for a righteous cause and remain untouched by the harm.

The Maranatha Empire teaches us to fear the collapse of Christian influence.

Jesus teaches us to fear gaining the world and losing our soul.

The Maranatha Empire asks, “How do we take back the culture?”

Jesus asks, “Can you drink the cup that I drink?”

The Maranatha Empire says, “Blessed are the winners.”

Jesus says, “Blessed are the meek.”

The Maranatha Empire says, “Blessed are the forceful, for they shall secure the future.”

Jesus says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.”

And perhaps this is the word for us now:

The church does not need to become more powerful.

The church needs to become more faithful.

Not passive. Not silent. Not withdrawn into pious irrelevance. But faithful in the particular, cruciform, stubborn way of Jesus. Faithful enough to resist evil without becoming its mirror. Faithful enough to tell the truth without hatred. Faithful enough to protect the vulnerable without worshiping violence. Faithful enough to build communities of economic sharing, hospitality, forgiveness, courage, and joy. Faithful enough to be a people who can live without controlling the outcome.

That is the hard part.

Empire is attractive because it promises control.

Jesus offers communion.

Empire promises security.

Jesus offers peace.

Empire promises victory over enemies.

Jesus offers reconciliation that may begin with our repentance.

Empire promises to make us great.

Jesus invites us to become small enough to enter the kingdom.

So, let the Maranatha Empire fall.

Let it fall first in us.

Let it fall in every place where we have confused anxiety with zeal. Let it fall where we have preferred dominance to witness. Let it fall where we have wanted laws to do what discipleship would not. Let it fall where we have used the suffering of others as fuel for our own righteousness. Let it fall where we have asked Jesus to come only after we have arranged the throne to our liking.

And when it falls, may something older and more beautiful remain.

A table.

A basin.

A towel.

A loaf.

A cup.

A people gathered without illusion, without empire, without the need to be impressive, whispering the ancient prayer not as conquerors but as witnesses:

Maranatha.

Come, Lord Jesus.

Come not to crown our domination, but to free us from it.

Come not to baptize our fear, but to cast it out.

Come not to make our empire holy, but to teach us again that your kingdom comes like a seed, like yeast, like mercy, like a Lamb who was slain and yet lives.

And until you come, make us faithful.

Not imperial.

Not triumphant.

Not afraid.

Faithful.

It has turned the dangerous, tactical commands of a First-Century Revolutionary into a collection of pastel-colored suggestions for the weak. You’ve been taught that being the “Salt of the Earth” is about being a nice neighbor with a pleasant temperament. That is a lie. That is the talk of men who have never had to survive a night in the dirt.

In the real world—the one Jesus actually stood in—salt was a combatant. It was a chemical weapon used against the cold, the rot, and the dark. If you strip away the modern insulation and the automated comforts of your life, the metaphor stops being “flavorful” and starts being violent. It is time to look at the “Fire-Starter” reality of the Gospel with the eyes of a man who understands that if he isn’t providing the heat, he is just taking up space in a world that is freezing to death.

The Raw Mechanics of the Ancient Ignition

To get this, you have to get your hands dirty in the history. In the ancient Levant, wood was for kings and temples. The common man, the laborer, the man in the trenches, he didn’t have oak logs. He had dung cakes. He gathered animal waste, dried it in the sun, and piled it in an earthen mud oven. But here is the technical reality: dung smolders. It’s a low-grade fuel that chokes out more smoke than heat. It lacks the chemical “kick” required to bake the bread that keeps a family alive.

This is where the Salt comes in. It wasn’t in a shaker; it was in slabs. Men would place thick plates of rock salt at the base of the oven. When the smoldering dung hit that salt, it triggered a thermal-chemical reaction. The salt acted as a catalyst, forcing the waste to burn hotter, cleaner, and longer.

That is your job description. You are not the fuel, and you are not the oven. You are the catalyst. You are placed in a world that is fueled by “dung”—by mediocrity, by broken systems, by low-quality human nature. Your presence is meant to provoke a reaction. If you walk into a workplace or a home and the “fire” stays at a low, smoky smolder, you have failed. A man of God provides the chemical kick that turns a mess into a roar. You were designed to be the reason the heat goes up.

The Stench of the Inert: Why the “Safe” Man is Worthless

The tragedy of the modern “Christian man” is that he has become chemically inert. He sits in the oven, he looks like salt, he smells like the church, but he creates zero reaction. In the ancient world, after years of intense heat, a salt plate would eventually undergo a molecular change. It would lose its reactivity. It was still physically there, but it was “dead.” It no longer provoked the fire.

This is the “Savor” Jesus was talking about. He wasn’t talking about your personality; He was talking about your potency. A man who has lost his savor is a man who has lost his ability to make things uncomfortable for the dark. If your “faith” doesn’t sting, if it doesn’t provoke, if it doesn’t ignite the men around you, then you are a spiritual casualty. You are a cold rock sitting in a cold oven.

The “grocery store” lens tells you to stay “pure” by staying separate. The survival lens tells you that salt is only useful when it’s rubbed into the fuel. If you’re too “pious” to touch the dung, you’ll never see the fire. You’ve traded your masculine authority for a passive seat in the pews, and you’re wondering why your life feels like it’s smoldering out.

The Footpath Fate: No Mercy for the Useless

There is a brutal, hardboiled end for the tool that doesn’t work. In a survival culture, there is no sentimentality. When that salt plate became inert, it was a waste of space. It couldn’t go in the garden because it would poison the soil, and it couldn’t stay in the oven because it was just a cold obstacle.

Jesus was blunt: it is “good for nothing.” It gets thrown out into the street. It gets used to fill potholes in the footpath to be “trampled underfoot by men.”

Look at the world around you. The culture isn’t just ignoring the church; it is walking all over it. That isn’t because the world is “mean”; it’s because the salt has lost its sting. A man who won’t ignite the fire will eventually be used as gravel for someone else’s boots. If you aren’t a catalyst for God, you are just debris for the world. You have a choice: provide the heat that saves the house, or become the dirt that hardens the road.

Proximity and the Necessity of the “Rub”

You cannot start a fire from the sidelines. For the salt plate to work, it had to be at the very bottom, in the dark, under the weight of the fuel, in the middle of the heat. You have to get rubbed in.

Most men want to be “salt” from a distance. They want to tweet about the fire without ever feeling the smoke. But the Gospel is a contact sport. It requires you to bring your integrity and your “righteous anger” into direct contact with the rot of this world until something catches. You have to be willing to be the foundation of a fire that might consume you.

The “grocery store” faith is for the weak. The “survival” faith is for the men who realize that the world is freezing and they are the only ones with the chemical makeup to change the temperature. Get off the shelf. Get into the oven. Either ignite the mess around you tonight, or start getting used to the feeling of being walked on. The Master didn’t call you to be “nice”—He called you to be the reason the world finally feels the heat.

Call to Action

The oven is cold, and the world is smoldering in the gray smoke of its own rot. You can keep sitting on the shelf like a decorative jar of white powder, or you can finally get rubbed into the mess.

Stop pretending your “niceness” is a virtue when it’s actually just a lack of chemical potency. If you aren’t changing the temperature of your home, your workplace, and your city, you aren’t salt—you’re just debris. The Master didn’t call you to blend in; He called you to ignite.

Ignite the fire in your soul tonight. Stop being safe. Start being a catalyst. Get in the oven and burn, or get off the line and let a real man take your place.

The delusion that God has a “Plan A” career for you—and that finding it is the prerequisite for a blessed life—is a modern invention fueled by the luxury of choice. In the ancient world, your “calling” was the work in front of you. Period. The Scripture doesn’t view your job as a vehicle for self-expression; it views it as a theater for obedience. If you are not working “as unto the Lord” in the job you currently despise, you won’t serve Him in the one you think you want. Men today use the quest for “God’s calling” as an escape hatch from the gritty reality of their current responsibilities. They want the crown without the cross, the “ideal role” without the prerequisite of faithfulness in the mundane. You aren’t a “creative,” a “consultant,” or an “executive” in the eyes of Heaven—you are a servant. Stop looking for a slot that fits your ego and start doing the work that feeds your family and honors your King.

This shift from “doing the right thing” to “finding the right slot” has turned men into spiritual shoppers. We treat the will of God like a product on a shelf, comparing features and waiting for a sale. We have forgotten that the will of God is not a destination; it is a direction. The historical reality is that the men God used in the Bible were almost always busy doing something else when the call came. Moses was tending sheep; Peter was mending nets; Matthew was counting tax money. They weren’t sitting in a room “discerning” their next move; they were occupied with the duty of the moment. Your life is rotting in the sun because you refuse to engage with the reality of the present. You are waiting for a voice from the clouds to tell you which way to turn the wheel while you haven’t even put the car in gear. God’s will isn’t a hidden treasure to be discovered; it is a path to be walked by the man who is already moving.

The Blood and Bone of the Revealed Will: Obeying the Open Book

You claim you can’t find God’s will? That is a lie. God has already published His will in an open book, written in black and white and dripping with the blood of men who actually followed it. The fundamental failure of the modern man is his refusal to distinguish between God’s Moral Will and His Sovereign Will. If you are looking for a “sign” about a job while you are neglecting the clear commands of the Word, you aren’t a seeker—you are a rebel in a suit of piety.

Most men ignore the Revealed Will because it requires work, sacrifice, and a death to self. It is much easier to wait for a “feeling” about a promotion than it is to mortify the sin of lust or to lead your family in the hard path of discipleship. We want the secret blueprint because it feels personalized and special, whereas the Moral Will is universal and demanding. But here is the brutal truth: God has no obligation to show you the next step in your career if you are ignoring the last command He gave you in His Word. The “Secret Will” of God—His sovereign, providential governance over the timeline of history—is none of your business. You don’t “discover” providence; you trust it. You stop trying to pick the lock of the future and start obeying the orders of the present.

The man who hunts for a secret plan while ignoring a clear command is an idolater. He is worshipping his own sense of “destiny” rather than the God who called him to holiness. When you stop treating God like a cosmic vending machine for personal direction and start treating Him as the Sovereign King, the paralysis of choice evaporates. If you are walking in active, blood-earnest obedience to the commands God has already given, the pressure to “guess” His secret thoughts is replaced by the freedom of a son who knows his Father is in control of the outcome. You don’t need a vision when you have a Verse. You don’t need a fleece when you have a Command. Get off the floor, put the “discernment” journals away, and start doing what the Book says. The wreckage of your life isn’t due to a lack of information; it’s due to a lack of submission.

The Brutal Freedom of the Wise: Taking the Weight of Choice

God did not create you to be a puppet on a string; He created you to be a man. Where the Scripture is silent—on which industry you enter, which city you move to, which house you purchase—He has given you the terrifying weight of freedom. It is called wisdom. It is the muscle of the soul, and for most modern men, it has gone soft from disuse. We want God to make the choice for us so we can blame Him if it goes wrong. We want a “sign” so we don’t have to take the responsibility of a decision. But the “Way of Wisdom” demands that you look at the facts, seek counsel from men who have scars and sense, pray for a clear head, and then—for the love of God—move.

There are no “open doors” for the man who refuses to walk. We have turned “waiting on the Lord” into a spiritualized form of procrastination. Proverbs 16:9 declares that the heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Do you see the order there? The man plans. The man moves. And as he moves, the Sovereign God directs the path. You cannot steer a ship that is anchored in the harbor. You cannot establish the steps of a man who is sitting on his couch waiting for a mystical “peace” that never comes. The “peace of God” isn’t a prerequisite for action; it is often the result of it. You make the best decision you can with the wisdom you have, and you trust that God’s sovereignty is big enough to handle your choices.

The “Calling Fallacy” has turned the Christian life into a high-stakes guessing game where one wrong turn ruins everything. This is a pagan view of God.
