Steve has probably done more than any other single person to produce the relatively open market for winery direct shipping that exists today. He oversees state-level lobbying campaigns, serves on the board of Free the Grapes, and coordinates the Wine Institute’s efforts in Washington. In their conversation, Jason and Steve discuss his discovery of wine while studying public policy in his home state of Nebraska, his decision to join the Wine Institute in the 1980s, at a time when wineries couldn’t legally ship to any out-of-state customers, and the evolution of laws from bilateral reciprocity agreements to the first interstate permits that eventually landed a wine case in front of the Supreme Court in 2004. Steve shared what that experience was like, building a coalition of justices that was never seen before and has never been seen since, and then the state-by-state push to get them moved to a constitutionally sound framework. Plus, Jason shares his favorite “silly wine laws” and Steve previews what he thinks the biggest challenges are to the open access to wine going forward.
