To begin our #GreatLakes #plankton sampling, our research ship Limnos has to transit from Lake #Ontario to Lake #Erie using the Welland Canal. It was an exciting experience for our students. This is a 43 km trip, involving 8 locks, rising 100 m total height, since Niagara Falls is rather un-navigable 😉.

A very exciting day with our much delayed 🇨🇦 #DFO research ship 🚢 CCGS Limnos sailing to the Welland Canal for sampling on Lake Erie for the #GreatLakes Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative #CSMI2024 fieldyear. The ship has been in drydock since last June, and we are so happy to have her back. Science moorings will be deployed, and my Fisheries and Oceans #Canada #Science staff & students will be measuring #algae primary productivity, bacterial growth and #zooplankton across #LakeErie.
