YES, conservatives ARE an existential threat to humanity.
Also, disclosure, because I think is fair/due to anyone who might see it.
I am a firm believer in the basics of public health, socialized medicine.
I also spent more than a couple years dealing with mil-side #CBRNE, working along #USAMRIID and #CDC (when those meant something), going places and under circumstances most sensible people avoid.
I have had privileged access to information, given later half of that career. Not elaborating.

This is a personal revisit of a documented (kept elsewhere), communal diary of the whole pandemic. Due to PII included, not linking.

Overall, the theme of cautious optimism, given the latest reports resonates.
No, COVID didn't disappear, whatsoever. Neither did flu, etc. But we are at a much better place, now.
Until the next thing that is exacerbate by stupidity of conservaturds. Yes, the political right is a major impediment to advance of, and an existential threat to humanity.
Biology doesn't care about your opinions. We are all just tissue, for viruses.

The political and cultural inclinations mater, so much.
A simple act of mitigating spread by YOU makes a world of difference, but ultimately - as demonstrated - can not be regulated by nanny state.
Most Asian countries have the cultural habit of not coming to work, and wearing a face mask to limit exposure to OTHERS. The West, whole of it, worst in the US, seems to fail at that simple act of decency.

Among the unvaccinated, reinfecton cycles remain high, at 18mos to 2yrs. Thankfully, severity of latest strains seem a bit lower.
That is for perspective, that a ~4yr reinfection AVERAGE means the vaccinated are doing fairly ok.
This is NOT to say those with impaired immune systems are forgotten. They suffer.
No, vaccination is NOT the only mitigation, but remains the best baseline social medicine means. Ponder those words.

It's been just over six years. Twenty, if you count first documented outbreaks of CoV(b) #MERS.
We are still not at adequate levels of vaccination. Mostly due to political rightwing idiocy. Not mincing words, it's all MAGAts' fault.They bought the hype, gleefully.
BUT there are good news. Some recent reports show average reinfection cycles that hint that, among the vaccinated, COVID has reached just under flu reinfection cycles.

Sometime around mid to late November 2019, a few SMEs were guesstimating the nCoV2(b)-2019 caused #SARS would hit like #MERS / #MSARS /#ARDS and be analogue to the worst outbreaks of Influenza A (H5Nx), and eventually, after adequate mitigation methods (vaccine) developed and deployed, hit flu levels of reinfection and outbreak severity

First US reported case, mid January 2020. By late February, first US death
Right around this time, April 2020, word from the first vaccine hitting Phase-II (human testing). Pfizer used a leaked (thank you, dying Chinese scientist) sequencing from Shanghai.
MAGAts were gargling ivermectin, bleach and thinking about shoving IR lamps up their asses. Lest we forget.
Refirgerated truck, mobile mortuaries were seen in big US cities.

IN CASE ANYONE WONDERING....
I am hitting a series of fora/exchanges with people, which took place at the onset of the whole COVI19 pandemic and political debacle.
The first bits of news flowing, of a raging spread of a virus, likely a respiratory hemorrhagic fever, from Wuhan were circa September 2019.
By December 2019 the Orange Anal Wart was pointedly ignoring it, after gloating about disbanding the CDC Pandemic task Force.
