Webb insists he wants “a high threshold for penalising contact - it aids the flow and rhythm and tempo of the game” and “a high bar for intervention with VAR”. That “guidance wasn’t followed properly,” Webb says on “Match Officials - Mic’d Up” broadcast on Sky Sports and TNT tonight.
“It happens when Muniz controls the ball, turns naturally and brings his foot down on to Chalobah who has moved his foot into a space which the Fulham player has the right to put his foot into in that normal way. So, a misjudgement by the officials”.
No consolation to Fulham but Webb adds that “we understand that, if we get it wrong like we did on this occasion, the impact is significant and we’re always, always striving to do better”... 1/2
I imagine refs’ chief Howard Webb will acknowledge officials got the Muniz/Chalobah #CHEFUL incident wrong when he discusses it with Michael Owen on Sky Sports and TNT tonight.
Webb trying to encourage high threshold for penalising contact and trying to encourage VAR to interfere as little as possible. That intervention ruined what would have been a debut goal for Josh King. Webb bound to emphasise that PGMO is not on some mission to disallow goals.

Chelsea FC 🤖Refs’ chief Howard Webb has contacted #FFC over the shocking and unfair disallowing of Josh King’s goal in #CHEFUL. VAR for the Muniz/Chalobah mistake, Michael Salisbury, dropped for #LIVARS today. That signals that Webb and PGMO acknowledge an error made in VAR intervention. It’s understood to not be in line with PGMO principle of ‘referee’s call’ and its high bar for intervention, reserved for clear and obvious errors.
Little consolation for Fulham, King and Marco Silva as the visitors were playing well and frustration over the incident clearly affected them. But at least Webb and PGMO are accepting VAR blame. John Brooks will now be VAR for Anfield game.
