Several Defence dignitaries paid tribute to India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, at the United Service Institution of India (USI) in Delhi on December 10. On December 8, 2021, General Rawat, along with his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 others, lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Sharing his experience with General Rawat, current Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan said that he always faced operational challenges with a different approach. He said, “General Rawat believed that strong punitive actions along the Line of Control (LoC) and physical domination would moderate Pakistan’s behaviour.” Further, General Anil Chauhan, also talked about Operation Sunrise in Myanmar. He said, “As a core commander, General Rawat was the architect of the first surgical strikes undertaken by India in a foreign country. Operation Sunrise resulted in bringing down insurgency levels in the north-east India.”
