did you know that #giraffes are osteophages?
#bones are rich in phosphorus, which is hard to come by on the savanna, and giraffes need lots of phosphorus to grow their own bones big and strong! (giraffes are just full of bones)
they also eat horns, antlers, and ivory, so nothing is off limits #BonePosting ☠️
this big sexy motherfucker right here is Sivatherium gigantum, an extinct giraffid from the late miocene that ranged all over africa and india.
more similar to a giant okapi than a modern giraffe, their dentition and skeletal structure suggests they could alternate between lowering their heads to graze and raising them upright to browse higher foliage, which would have required massive neck muscles to support their large heads through the full range of motion.
fossil records suggest one subspecies survived until as little as 8,000 years ago #BonePosting ☠️
