What is the conscience in the Bible?
 
It’s the God-given inner awareness that judges our actions according to a moral standard. It can accuse, excuse, weaken, become defiled—even seared. And that’s exactly why we need more than conscience. We need Christ.
 
The conscience reveals the problem. The gospel gives the answer.

John Downame, English Puritan, writes on oppression. Cruelty, unmercifulness, lack of pity, and the stopping of ears at cry of poor will result in God stopping His ears. But the merciful will find mercy.

There’s a way to fit this 100% within Reformation soteriology— this guy was at Westminster! But not the reformed-adjacent practice of making “oppression”, per se, a no-no for Christians to talk about. Met such pastors.
