Since 2020, Henderson and her colleagues from Mexico and US had been tracking a group of whales producing a distinctive call, tagged #BW43, which they initially thought was Perrin’s #beakedwhale, another species never seen in the wild. Finding ginkgo-toothed beaked whales near Mexico was a big surprise – from stranding records, they had often been found washed up on other side of the Pacific.

A wildlife ranger says the discovery of a #beached #whale on #SouthAustralia's #KangarooIsland is a "peculiar" occurrence.

The National Parks & Wildlife Service South Australia ranger told ABC Radio on Monday the creature, discovered at #AmericanRiver on the eastern end of the island, "appeared to be a #beakedwhale of some sort".

He added it was rare for the deep-sea animal to turn up where it did, but was likely the result of a "natural process". #auspol

Because the #Arnoux's #beakedwhale is rarely observed, little is known about this species. During eleven previous Polarstern expeditions in the #SouthernOcean, conducted between 1988 and 2018, this species was never seen.
