The power of non-violent protests. Following on from my short series on changing social norms, some of you might be interested in reading about the work of Erica Chenoweth, a political scientist from Harvard University. She looked historically at the success of political protests. According to her research, it takes around 3.5% of the population actively participating in the protests to ensure serious political change. (Also non violent protests tended to be more successful than violent ones). One easy way to follow up her research is to read the article via BBC futurenow (UK) written by David Robson and published in May- as portrayed in the above photo.
