Oh FFS, #BbcSounds on #Alexa this morning won’t let me do any on-demand stuff, like rewinding or playing archive shows, unless I link the app to my BBC account, and they offer to send a link to my Alexa app to tell me what to do.

Great, except the Alexa skill is already linked to my account, Alexa knows it’s my profile active, and the link never gets sent.

So now I have a hobbled BBC Sounds on our #amazonEcho devices that was working perfectly yesterday 😫

Transcription (BBC Sounds)

A quick note to sing the praises of the two-part drama Transcription, which was broadcast on Radio 4 and is available on BBC Sounds. It’s part of the “Drama on 4” feed, if you subscribe to that.

It’s based on Kate Atkinson’s novel of the same name (which came out in 2018). It’s the story of a young woman who is tasked with transcribing audio recordings of London-based nazi fifth columnists in 1940.

Ten years later, now working in children’s programming at the BBC, she spots a face from the past and shortly after receives a threatening note… something catching up with her.

Adapted for radio by Kate Hims and featuring Phoebe Pryce, Toby Jones, and Rufus Wright, it also features my favourite thing about radio drama, several characters played by the same person. In fact, lots of the roles are played by “members of the cast”. For example, Trude, Mrs Scaife, Frau Rosenfeld, and the Headmistress are all played by Fenella Woolgar. A Boy, a Driver, Dennis, and the Mortician are all played by Xavier Starr.

I usually deduct points when children are played by grown-ass adults, but I forgive in this case because I didn’t notice. That’s the crucial thing.

Anyway, it’s great. Atmospheric, funny at times, dark at others, a great listen. Two episodes, just under an hour each.
