That $50 drip coffee maker on your counter? Destined for the landfill after a few years of dispensing mediocre coffee
If you’re using a pod-based system like #Keurig, the effective price of beans is about $30 per pound, two to three times the price of whole beans. By contrast, a $250 machine that lasts 15 years saves about $2,000 over that period, an 800 percent return

That new $50 drip coffee maker on your counter? Destined for the landfill after a few years of dispensing mediocre coffee.

The Washington Post

Our "christmas presents" this year was more coffee equipment. The Bravo mini tamper is anything but "mini" and interesting to see that internals is very repairable (having now disassembled it twice). Quality piece of gear built to last a lifetime!

Something I appreciate about #bifl or #buyforlife mentality, is that "shopping" has a certain background anxiety in it which became obvious only after becoming a much calmer person.

There is anxiety motivating one to buy products, anxiety motivating one to not buy in case of regret, anxiety about finding the perfect product, sustainability anxiety etc.

Being less dependent on stuff and buying stuff that lasts means the less I have to go through the grind of shopping again.

@SpencerWolfe @pabloniusmonk There's something about these watches, isn't there? They're not quite minimal in their design, but instantly recognizable and a style icon in their own right.

I tried making one truly waterproof once, by putting oil inside of it. But it leaked out. There were some guides online, but very American, using types of oil not really available here, if I remember right...

I would like your Buy-It-For-Life personal recommendations for tech.
Household appliances, gadgets, mp3 player, phone, even just regular clockwork watches, or your EDC.
What have you got, that's lasted far longer than expected, to the point you might call it 'Heirloom Technology'.

Trying to encompass the full extend of what BIFL means to me ("Buy It For Life"):

- Lasts a long time.
- Doesn't go obsolete easily.
- Simple timeless design and aesthetic that wont feel "dated" easily.
- Reliable time-tested construction which doesn't have unforeseen bugs, issues and failures.
- A new version with a few tweaks doesn't come out every year or so to entice me.
- Can be repaired.
- Can buy the same one again in 10+ years time if lost or destroyed.

And that's the second one today. Being a responsible home owner is being made difficult...
Either I'm very strong, or these things are flimsy. Not very #bifl (buy it for life).

@serge Digging in to other videos, it looks like you can hone a full new edge on if you steel the cutting surfaces straight and use a narrow stone. I’ve mostly switched to scary-sharp style lapping-film-on-glass for my cutting tools, but I’ll have to try with my old stones.
