Gamlehaugen (The Old Hill), the #RoyalCastle in #Bergen, sometime in the 30s.

Originally built as a family home for Christian Michelsen, the first prime minister of the modern independent #Norway. The reason he got this built in 1901 – which at the time was in #Fana municipality, bordering Bergen – was as a protest against the high local tax rate of Bergen municipality. 14% vs. 4% was apparently enough to drive even a Bergen patriot out of the city.

When he died in 1925, the property was given to the state on the condition of it being kept well-maintainted. It has since been the Royal #Castle when the family is in town.

In 1972 Fana municipality was made part of the larger Bergen municipality.

Sandviken, late around 1919.

The building to the right is "Slaktehuset", the first municipal butcher house finished around the time when this photo was made – as a way to regulate safe and hygenic treatment of raw meat. The building on the top of the hill is Rothaugen school, still the city center school for 13-15 year old.

Korskirkeallmenningen winter of 1946. Fresh snow covers the street going up from #Korskirken (Church of the Holy Cross) towards Mount #Fløyen, and kids use it as best they can. Got to get to it before the rain comes back!

Puddefjord #bridge. Puddikæn. Pudden. A beloved child has many names.

This bridge was built in 1956, and connected the city center peninsula with Gyldenpris, and on to important throughlines to Fyllingsdalen and Laksevåg, an important part of the urbanisation of adjacent areas of #Bergen.

The original bridge had 3 lanes, the middle of which changed direction based on rush traffic – to the city in the morning, and from the city in the afternoon. An identical bridge was build next to it in 1999, so the modern bridge has six lanes – three each way.
