🧵 6/n next time, i won't be double-compressing my #MDISC #BDXL #backup.

I can't use the disc image directly, because in my infinite wisdom, i've compressed the already compressed file system.

Now i get to wait another hour-ish, before i can access my rather old files.

Well, i can try and scrape 'em off the busted NVMe.

#Sony cuts 250 jobs at optical media plant — recordable disc production to be phased out, says report. Pressed disc production doesn't seem to be targeted by the cuts. https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/storage/sony-cuts-250-jobs-at-optical-media-plant-recordable-disc-production-to-be-phased-out-says-report

Sony kills off Blu-ray and optical disks for consumer market — business-to-business production to continue until unprofitable. https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/sony-stops-producing-blu-ray-and-optical-disks-for-consumer-market-business-to-business-production-to-continue-until-unprofitable ➡️ seguirán produciendo para otros.

@cliffwade OFC!

It even has a #BDXL Burner and I was thinking about getting an #HDDVD Burner as well...

The nice part is that my ODD is toolless swappable on the go...

@Anorack Personally I not only have that, but the LG GGC-H20N which is a combo BD/HD-DVD ROM + CD/DVD-ReWriter...

It's also 4x taller than the 128GB capable #BDXL burner I have installed in the same system...

@TechConnectify technically you're wrong: #DVD players and drives also need to have a second #IR #Laser to read #CDs...

They are just in the same assembly...

In fact, I have a slimline #BDXL burner which has at least 4 lasers since #BDXL have an even shorter wavelenght than #BD & #HDDVD.

So OFC it'll assume it's a #CD first, as #DVDs were propably just an afterthought of an existing product it succeeded at the high end.

@SecurityWriter Not only that, but most of it is caused by the requirement to have assets at least 3 times in several cases, since the most optimal texture [compression] formats are proprietary to manufacturers if not GPU generations.

This is why a #BDXL is sufficient for a #console game to this day: Both #XboxSeries and #PS5 are #AMD #SoC's!
