2008: Hamilton triumphs in Australia and Rosberg’s first podium
#OnThisDay 16th March, at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix Rubens Barrichello celebrated his 250th Grand Prix start. However, it was a disappointing day for him after he was disqualified for ignoring a red light at the pit-lane exit. Lewis Hamilton, who started on pole, won the race, setting the stage for his eventual Drivers’ Championship victory that year.
Nick Heidfeld secured second for Sauber, and Nico Rosberg third in a Williams. This was Rosberg’s first F1 podium finish.
The race was also the first time in seven years, since the 2001 San Marino Grand Prix, not to feature cars using traction control, which the FIA had banned at the end of 2007.
