Auguste Comte "le grand pontife" of positivism, in his declining years wrote to the general of the Society of Jesus with a proposal to enter into an alliance with representatives of the "positivist religion" of mankind. Moreover, Comte expresses wonder in a letter to the general that the Jesuits associated their name with the name of such an insignificant person as Jesus, and advises the general to rename the Jesuits in memory of Ignatius Loyola
