Holiday Day 2: Sanctuary

Native oak rainforest at Ariundle is one of my woodlands. Especially in autumn. Especially on a day of mixed sunshine and showers, er, downpours. We spent a very happy half an hour in the depths of the woods just watching the light on moss (so thick!) and trees. Perfect.
Oh, there was snow on Ben Nevis as well :)

Ariundle Oakwoods circular

The Ariundle Oakwoods are a truly stunning place, a surviving fragment of the great Atlantic Oakwoods - a temperate rainforest which once swathed much of Europe's western coastline. The name comes from the Gaelic Àirigh Fhionndail - the shieling of the white meadow.

Light Through Trees

Simple scenes: this pattern of tree trunks caught my eye, with the bright sunlight streaming through behind them, as I was walking along the main path through the woods.
Given the hard contrast of the scene, I thought I'd experiment with a recently acquired vari-ND/Pro-Mist combi filter.

Remains of the Sunart Oakwood that used to stretch the Atlantic coast of Europe from Norway to Portugal. Still a beautiful place despite what humans did to it in previous centuries.
