1000 Day Album Challenge (#56) The Jam: All Mod Cons (1978) [25.02.24]
getting drugged up with my trendy friends they really dig me and I dig them / and the bread I spend - is like my fame - it's quickly diminished…
The Jam were one of the biggest bands of their era in the U.K., but somehow never made a dent in the U.S. in their 5 ½ year recording career they released six studio albums and one live album. all of them reached the Top 25 in the U.K. with four making it to #6 or better. only two of their albums made the Top 100 stateside. only two singles made the Top 100 in the states while nine of their singles made the Top Ten, 15 made the Top 20, and all of their singles made the Top 40 at home.
I don’t exactly how but I discovered The Jam while still in high school. I think Sound Affects (1980) was their only album I owned before heading off to Bates. by sometime my sophomore year I owned all of their studio albums as well as their live one, Dig The New Breed (1982). they came out of the punk movement, but always identified with the British mod scene of the mid-sixties.
All Mod Cons has always been my favorite Jam album. I’ve listened more to this than any of their other albums. it features three of my favorite Jam songs ever – To Be Someone (Didn’t We Have a Nice Time), English Rose, and Down in the Tube Station at Midnight.
That’s Entertainment is my favorite Jam song, but Down in the Tube Station at Midnight is a very close number two. it is a powerfully anti-racist song told from the perspective of a presumably Pakistani or Indian Brit who is attacked by some thugs on his way home, “I first felt a fist, and then a kick / I could now smell their breath / they smelt of pubs and Wormwood Scrubs / and too many right wing meetings.” musically the tension in the song continues to rise throughout the song which makes the lyrics hit that much harder.
as I often do I am listening to All Mod Cons as I write this and even though it’s been a while since I last listened to this it really holds up. it is a rich and rewarding album
