Fun Time Lava! can only be described as a troll map and I have no idea why it was ever included in the game. It’s a simple box filled with bobbing platforms, each one moving at a different speed and out of phase with others. If you miss a jump, you fall into lava and die. The lack of walljumps in 2.x makes moving around a real pain.

Crown Hotel, being one of the original default maps, enjoyed outsize popularity in the early days of the mod, but quickly fell out of favor as third-party mappers started producing more interesting layouts. When 2.0 was released, this map was abandoned by both the dev team and players.

According to the readme, it was inspired by an AQ2 map called Asylum.

World-of-Escher (or “a world of escher paintings”, as the levelshot says) is inspired by M. C. Escher’s artworks; unfortunately, as his impossible shapes are impossible to replicate in 3D space, the actual Escher-inspired bits of the map look pretty plain and unremarkable.

The missing texture visible in some shots is ozedood/concrete.tga from some unidentified third-party map.

This is a *very* early version of Crossing. You can sort of recognize the general layout, but there are hardly any interior spaces, buildings have odd proportions, there are unexpected sheds, gantries, chimneys… The map is full of holes and visible caulk and fragments of hastily moved stuff. It’s only playable in the most basic sense that you can spawn and run around.

Hollywood Holocaust is the first map (E1L1) of Duke Nukem 3D. This is a reasonably close recreation, down to the reused textures, but not identical to the original. The cinema is different, some paths are missing and the rooftops form a playable area in their own right.

Veni, vulgi, vanesci. Emperor Wu appeared out of nowhere, dropped one of the most popular maps of all time in our laps and left.

In the first version of Turnpike, the station and garden area is noticeably different (I’m not even sure it’s possible to perform the van jump in this version). The station is plastered with advertisements for Dub Light beer that’s supposed to get you “Really F’d Up.”

The Slums of Chicago is Devlin’s third map after Kriegerhorn and Japanese Gardens. According to the readme, it takes place after the ambush and murder of two cops (you can see their burning car on the street).

This is another fairly dark map, presumably because getting shot from the shadows is an incredibly gangsta way to go. Only FFA, TDM and TS are supported.

Like Alps, Canyon is another ut.map-depot.com mapping contest entry. This is a fairly plain-looking map, all orange rock walls (and some dark caves), bisected by a river that can be crossed via two bridges. An eagle circles overhead, screaming like a pissed-off cat. The waterfall on the levelshot is animated, as well as the sky in the actual map.
