Gli ultimi giorni di Francis Kaufmann, alias Rexal Ford, a Roma, fotogramma per fotogramma. È la ricostruzione tradotta in un video di quasi mezz’ora mostrato nella terza udienza in corte d’Assise del processo che vede il 46enne californiano imputato per il duplice omicidio volontario e pluriaggravato della sua compagna, la 28enne russa Anastasia Trofimova, e della loro figlia di neanche un anno, Andromeda, nata durante i mesi in cui la coppia viveva a Malta. Mamma e figlia compaiono con Kaufmann in quelle che saranno le loro ultime ore di vita, così come le ha ricostruite la procura tramite la squadra mobile. In uno dei fotogrammi più significativi, la donna e la bambina sono con l’imputato in uno Starbucks in centro a Roma. Le videocamere di sicurezza interne riprendono per intero la scena già emersa dalle indagini sulla lite di Kaufmann (ubriaco) con un altro avventore che lo mette ko con un pugno. Il dettaglio significativo è però un altro e riguarda il vestitino rosa che indossa la piccola: è lo stesso che verrà ritrovato in un cesto dei rifiuti dentro Villa Pamphili non distante dal luogo del ritrovamento del suo cadavere. Un elemento di prova sottolineato anche da una delle investigatrici, Patrizia Franconieri, che nella sua deposizione in aula ha sostenuto che i due corpi delle vittime sono stati spogliati dall’assassino per renderne complicata l’identificazione e sviare le indagini. Un altro fotogramma assai significativo è quello della notte tra il sei e il sette giugno. Alle 2,35 Kaufmann viene inquadrato mentre si aggira nell’area del mercato di San Silverio dove era stato visto già nei giorni prima con la famiglia. Stavolta però è da solo. Anastasia è morta da circa due giorni, Andromeda è stata appena uccisa. È infatti dell’1,35 la chiamata di un ragazzo minorenne al 112 per segnalare su via Leone XIII, all’ingresso di Villa Pamphili, la presenza di un uomo con in braccio una bambina tenuta in modo così innaturale da sembrare sospetto. La piccola forse era già morta e il padre stava andando a sbarazzarsi del cadavere. Altre telecamere riprendono per l’ultima volta anche la 28enne originaria di Omsk, in Siberia. È il 3 giugno, cammina in centro con la bambina e il compagno, che da lì a poche ora la ucciderà, forse quella notte stessa. L’orario esatto della morte della donna non è stato possibile ricostruirlo a causa dell’avanzato stato di decomposizione del cadavere, ma anche deducendolo dalle immagini successive che riprendono l’uomo da solo con la bambina senza più lei, viene racchiuso tra la sera del 3 e il 5 giugno. Kaufmann infine viene anche ripreso nelle fasi della fuga. In aeroporto mentre passa allo scanner il suo zaino, unico bagaglio che porterà in Grecia durante la breve latitanza, e alla fermata degli autobus della linea Flixbus. Verrà arrestato sull’isola di Skiathos dopo aver ordinato del sushi. Questa sua passione alimentare era emersa dai pagamenti della sua carta di credito a Roma e proprio cercando ristoranti di questo tipo sull’isola si è potuti risalire alla sua posizione e catturarlo.

The Nereids
In Greek mythology, the Nereid/Nereides are sea nymphs (female spirits of the sea/waters), the 50 daughters of Nereus (the “Old Man of the Sea”) & Doris (an Oceanid). They’re sisters of the Nerites. They often accompany Poseidon & can be kind to sailors (as in the Argonauts’ search for the Golden Fleece).
While they’re often grouped together as a group of sea nymphs, they represent the multifaceted nature of the Mediterranean.
The Nereids were distinct from other nymphs. Like the freshwater Naiads or the deep-ocean Oceanids. They were specifically associated with the Aegean Sea. The Nereids symbolized everything beautiful & kind about the sea. Their beautiful voices sang as they danced around their dad. They’re pictured as beautiful women crowned with branches of red coral & dressed in white silk robes trimmed with gold.
They lived with their dad, Nereus, in the depths of a golden palace. While there were 50 sisters, 3 stand out:
In Homer’s Iliad XVIII, when Thetis cries out in sympathy for the grief of her son, Achilles, for the slain Patroclus, her sisters show up. 4 of her sisters, Cymodoce, Thalia, Nesaea, & Spio, were among the nymphs in the training of Cyrene. Later on, these 4 together with their sisters (Thetis, Melite, & Panopea) were able to help the hero Aeneas & his crew during a storm.
In 1 account, Cassiopeia boasted that her daughter, Andromeda, was more beautiful than the Nereides. The Nereids were livid at Cassiopeia’s claim. Their divine homie, Poseidon, being sympathetic towards them, sent a flood, & a sea monster to the land of the Aethiopians, demanding Andromeda’s sacrifices.
These sea goddesses were also said to reveal the mysteries of Dionysus & Persephone. The Nereids were worshipped in several parts of Greece. More specifically, in seaport towns, such as Cardamyle & the Isthmus of Corinth.
In the ancient world, the Nereids weren’t some fanciful fairy tales. They were a part of a functional religious system. Historical records show that sailors & military commanders (like Alexander the Great) offered sacrifices to the Nereids before going out on dangerous voyages.
The Nereid is the direct ancestor of the modern mermaid. The Greeks usually pictured them as fully human. But later Roman & Hellenistic art began to blend them with fish-like features.
The 3rd largest moon of Neptune is called Nereid. It was discovered in 1949 by Gerard Kuiper. The moon is famous for having 1 of the most eccentric (non-circular) orbits of any moon in the solar system. Also, there’s a “lake” in Antarctica that bears their name.
