Hace más de 1000 años, el astrónomo persa Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi publicó el registro más antiguo conocido de la humanidad de la galaxia de Andrómeda en "El Libro de las Estrellas Fijas" (Biblioteca Bodleiana MS. Marsh 144 p. 167). 800 años después, Andrómeda se convirtió en la entrada número 31 del "Catálogo de nebulosas y cúmulos estelares" de Charles Messier.
