She's now talking about getting the 8 Track Cartridge machine out of the loft to see if it works!

No, just no!
(Apart from the probability that the glue on the tapes has degraded, and I don't think I've got a standalone amplifier)

#8TrackMind was a neat zine started in the early 90s by #RussForster, ostensibly to bring together the #8TrackTape community in all it's eccentric, nostalgic, and perverse varieties. For years it was a regular resource for information about 8-tracks, and was the only place that jokes about that dreaded KER-CHUNK! sound could reliably be grokked. The initial run ended in 2000, but a lo-budge film documentary followed, and I understand Russ revived the mag proper a few years back. Shout-out this #8TrackTuesday to #OmnivoreRecordings who recently reissued #JimmieDaleAndTheFlatlanders beautiful 1973 debut album, All American Music, released only on #8TrackCartridge at the time. While this has been reissued before, here it's extended with bonus tracks and with the original cover artwork restored - hence definitive. Truly, this is my/your/our #Texas.

In the broad wake of #Deodato's 1973 smash-hit "Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)", STAR-PHASE was one of many studio groups (made up of "Tommy, Steve, Carolyn, Ron and Stephanie") who tried to cash in with disco-fied, instrumental versions of sci-fi movie themes from the day. They weren't at all successful and only ever got released on #8TrackTape. This means even today, grizzled hip-hop beat hunters haven't plundered their recordings. Yet.

Another that vies for trippiest #8TrackCartridge of all time: Golden Sunrise by Fire, Water, Air (Emerald Light Records and Tapes, 1977).

This Ya Ho Wha 13 spinoff album was recorded after Father Yod had passed on, released exclusively on #8TrackTape at the time. But it beats earlier recordings in both expansive instrumental power and deeply felt cosmic reach - no small feat. If only Moses had been handed a grip of these up on that Sinai mountaintop, we might all still be living in the Garden of Eden today.

Late 90's snapshot of a fabled suitcase full of #8TrackTapes - these would soundtrack visits to see my surrogate hippie "parents" J & S, who still reside somewhere deep in the heart of the TX hill country. Oh man did they love #RokyErikson!
