This month I played «Microprose Formula One Grand Prix» (reviewed in PC Games 2/1993: https://www.kultboy.com/index.php?site=t&id=23284). 🏎️ I very much enjoyed some nostalgia in the menus (love the map view) and I can see, how this was a big technical achievement back then. My brother loved those very simulationy games, setting up the car, driving season by season. 🔧 I preferred the way simpler «Grand Prix Circuit» from 1988. 🏁 It’s also been the first time in years I calibrated a joystick manually. 🕹️ #games #33YearsAgo
Last week I tried to play «Storm Master» by Silmarils again (reviewed in PC Joker 3/92: https://www.kultboy.com/index.php?site=t&id=19161). 🌬️⛵️ I remember me and my brother getting the game on a floppy disk from a friend (labeled by hand, as so many) and being excited about it. This time around I even took the time to read the manual, but I still cannot crack it – there is so much to do, so many options. 🤯 The style, however, still lures me in – I love that the council is your interface to the kingdom. #games #33YearsAgo
This month I played «Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen» for a few hours (German review in PC Games 1/93: https://www.kultboy.com/index.php?site=t&id=23231). As a big fan of «Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra», I expected to enjoy this one as well, but it was too similar and just not interesting enough to keep me playing. Perhaps it is just nostalgia that makes me enjoy MM3 and that cannot apply to MM4, because I did not play it back then. #PCgames #games #33YearsAgo
I recently reminisced with fellow game devs about the great games Max Design created back in the 90s. 🧡🩵 Today I played «1869», their sea trading simulation. ⛵️ Similar to «Oldtimer» (one of my favorite games) I love the music by Hannes Seifert and the pixel art as well; the gameplay tho … not that interesting anymore. 🤷‍♂️ I also realized again that I struggle with playing games that happen during colonial times without the topic being properly (critically) addressed. 🙄 #PCgames #games #33yearsAgo

Today I played

🃏Legend of Kyrandia: Book One 🃏
(🗞️ reviewed in PC Games 11/92)

Although it has been in my collection for quite a while, I never took the time to actually try it. Graphics and music are very Westwood; feels like coming home to someone, who enjoyed Dune and Eye of the Beholder. 😌
The puzzles are not that difficult, which is probably why I enjoyed my time in Kyrandia. I was especially impressed by the pixel art depth of field in the intro. 🤩

I particularly enjoyed getting the game box from the shelve, hooking the floppy drive up to my Mac and installing the game inside DosBox using the original floppy disks. 💾💾💾💾 They still work! 😊 Although it is a USB floppy drive, the sound still takes me back to the times when it was part of a 386 desktop PC. 🟠🔊 #games #33yearsAgo

Today I played «Lure of the Temptress» by Revolution Software (the early Charles Cecil), which was reviewed in PC Games 10/92. The pixel art still holds up pretty well, sound and music are rather sparse. ✨ Although the game is fairly short, controls and character dynamics feel fairly modern, almost like an open world game. The creators called it “Virtual Theatre”. 🎭 I always enjoyed the facial expression of the two Skorls on the cover. 😏😅 #games #33yearsAgo

🗓️ 33 years & 3 months ago my brother bought the first issue of the »PC Games« (10/92). 📰 The German magazine came with a demo disk, which was a novelty at the time. 💾 I was eight years old and amazed by all the colorful screenshots of games I did not know anything about. 🤩 Years later I would become a subscriber myself and collect every issue up until the 20th anniversary. #PCgames #games #33yearsAgo
Played some «Bundesliga Manager Professional» this month – a game I loved when I grew up. It still looks charming to me (in a kind of German way), although the gameplay is not as captivating as I had it in mind. Every turn I would only make minor adjustments and wait for money to upgrade my stadium. After a few games it became quite dull. Maybe it was this kind of simplicity I enjoyed back then. 💁‍♂️ Still, our 2:0 home victory against Borussia Dortmund remains unforgotten. 💪 #games #33YearsAgo
2/2025: Haven’t played anything for my #games #33yearsago project this month, so I am instead showing a game I played in November last year, which is also 33 years old: Speedball 2 – Brutal Deluxe 🪩💨 I gotta say, it is still in very good shape, one of the best futuristic sports games I know. The pixel art still holds up well, the music creates goosebumps and the gameplay is tough, but motivating. 💪 It also makes a great multiplayer game. 🎮 (covered in PC Joker 6/1991: https://www.kultpower.de/archiv/heft_pcjoker_1991-06)
