One of the most widely debated aspects of the iconic Masters Tournament is the popular event’s approach to fans using cell phones. The Masters has a ban on all cell phones, an approach that allows fans to be in the moment and essentially ensures they don't miss any action. The final round of the 2025 Masters on Sunday, April 13, was a perfect reminder of why the event is phone-free. During Rory McIlroy's iconic victory, the final leg he needed to become one of six golfers to win all four major championships, there was no shortage of drama.AdvertisementWhile McIlroy managed to
Bryson DeChambeau couldn’t get a word out of Rory McIlroy. As for Shane Lowry, he didn’t want to speak a word about the 2025 Masters winner. After a disappointing finish in the third round, the Irish professional golfer, finishing tied for 42nd (+4) at Augusta National, was disinterested in talking about the apparent story of the weekend — McIlroy. That was before the epic playoff between McIlroy and Justin Rose, well before CBS and Jim Nantz masterfully told the tale. But Lowry wasn’t keen to be part of it. He wasn’t thrilled with his own play, bogeying his final two
The stage is set for an epic finale Sunday at the 2025 Masters.Rory McIlroy vs. Bryson DeChambeau with a green jacket on the line. What more could you want? While the stakes are high for both players, each one has certain goals they would accomplish with a win. McIlroy would become the sixth player all-time to win the career Grand Slam, winning all four majors, and only the second to accomplish it with a win at the Masters. DeChambeau, however, could join a more exclusive club, though not as notable as what his counterpart is gunning for. With a win, DeChambeau would
While Thursday’s opening round of the 2025 Masters drew big viewership totals, the numbers were down compared to 2024. Much of the difference can likely be attributed to the absence of Tiger Woods. Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports detailed the differences. “Without Woods in the field, ESPN’s coverage averaged 2.3 million viewers (including out-of-home viewers) Thursday,” McCarthy wrote. “That’s a 28% drop from the 3.2 million viewers for last year’s first round when Woods was in action. Just the presence of the five-time Green Jacket winner in 2024 produced the highest first-round viewership since 2015.” McCarthy also noted a
Each year around this time, old stories come up about the strict rules governing what can and cannot be discussed on the broadcast of The Masters. In most cases, the bans are placed on golf colloquialisms. Whether it’s Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman or Scott Van Pelt and Chris Strange, or any of the numerous TV reporters on-site, they cannot use common phrases like “sand trap” or “rough.” Instead, they must use Augusta speak. The sand-filled potholes are “bunkers,” and the edge of the green is called the “second cut.” Then, there are the more high-stakes restrictions. Nantz cannot reference
The 89th iteration of the Masters, one of sport’s most iconic events, begins this week in Augusta, Ga. A field of 95 golfers will tee off at Augusta National on Thursday to begin their hunt for a chance to wear the coveted green jacket, which is given to the tournament champion every year.Only one Canadian has donned the jacket: Mike Weir, who won the 2003 Masters in a playoff. Because winning the tournament also comes with a lifetime invitation, Weir will be in the field on Thursday, along with three other Canadians: Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith and Nick Taylor. The world’s
As unlikely as Tiger Woods ever winning another Green Jacket or major is, he remains a storyline that golf is clinging to. For the second straight year, the Masters will tee off without Woods in the field. Woods hasn’t completed four rounds at the Masters since 2022. But there was a brief moment earlier this year where Brandel Chamblee admits he was thinking about one more comeback. Chamblee joined the latest episode of Barstool Sports’ Fore Play podcast to preview the Masters. During the interview, Chamblee was asked about Woods’ future and he thought back to watching the 15-time major
