#1790s (long 1790s, best of) I don't teach this stuff myself -- just an enthusiast who hasn't yet got to Thomas Holcroft, Frances Burney or Burke's Reflections (for completeness -- it always pays to read the opposition). I include Cowper in my list as he was so widely read and published then, not so much now, and because the work is so good. I left off Anna Laetitia Barbauld from the first list because of word count -- she is totally on it, and Edgeworth will be when I read more. #C18th
People who teach BritEnglish writing of the #1790s, what do you teach? Leaving out the obvious (Austen, Blake, Wordsworth & Coleridge) my list wd go something like this:
William Godwin, Caleb Williams
Mary Wollstonecraft, Vindications + Letters written in Sweden etc
Charlotte Smith Poems + Desmond
Olaudah Equiano, Interesting Narrative
Elizabeth Inchbald, A Simple Story
Mary Hays, Memoirs of Emma Courtney
Robert Bage, Hermsprong
William Cowper, Poems & Letters

It has taken me a long time to get to Mary Hays. Her novel (a lot based on life) is brilliant, fearless, philosophical (in dialogue with Rousseau, Wollstonecraft, Godwin (who appears as Mr Francis), Helvétius and many poets. It leaps right near to the top of my best of the #1790s, with Caleb Williams. Mémoires de Fille by #AnnieErnaux, 2016, matches and also exceeds The Years. Read it pretty much in one go. #Memoir #C18Literature #bookstodon . A rare, and possibly one-of-a-kind, item in the OGS Archives. A two-year run (1798-1799) of the Philadelphia, PA printed newspaper Porcupine’s Gazette.
