I have thoughts about #BurningMan, #Billionaires, #Principles and #Enshittification in real time. In full disclosure, I was on the playa in the early 90s. (Belly dancing fire juggler, as you do) Even then, a fair percent of attendees were techies who had made a little bit of money. But nobody was stupid-rich. It was more artist commune than tourist event...if you ran out of food or water, or took the brown acid, someone would help. There was not a lot of disparity between everyone there. The #10Principles were a thing that was almost sacred.
Fast forward to 2024, when there are 800-3000 private charter jets flights landing on the playa. Billionaires with private chefs and AC enclaves. Google now owns 51.2% of Burning Man. The festival, which started as a celebration of art and sustainability is now a kingrat of techbros, celebrities and influencers causing obscene amounts of waste and climate damage.
It's probably time to stop the burn.
