When you realise that you can't get rid of "bad" CLS unless users upgrade their browser:

Or, all my Bad CLS values come from Edge/85

For day 4 of #100DaysOfPerf some history and ๐ŸŽ‚:
๐Ÿ“ A belated HDB to Firebug ๐Ÿž. The famed tool turned 17 yesterday. Firebug ๐Ÿž was essentially a #webperf tool that predated most/all the ones you know. Devtools before devtools. Here's the video of the day it was launched @ Yahoo in 2007:
๐ŸŽฅ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4IgewBsxmY
๐Ÿ“ It inspired Pat Meenan to create WebPageTest:
"Firebug is WHY WPT even exists. All of the devs started using Firefox for Firebug but all our users were still on IE." - PM

It pays to inspect your website's CPU usage in Safari to improve #webperf and reduce energy usage. Here I spotted recurring rendering work due to infinite animations. After removing those using local overrides, I could see energy use drop.
Here's an excellent tutorial on how to use Safari's Web Inspector to debug CPU bottlenecks from WWDC19: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2019/513/

๐Ÿš€ Day 3 of #100DaysOfPerf. Following the foundational content shared Day 2, adding a book considered required reading:

๐Ÿ“š High Performance Browser Networking by Ilya Grigorik.

The network is also fundamental to web performance. Understanding latency, bandwidth, handshakes, protocols, the history of HTTP... all things that have mattered and do to this day. Definitely a great way to brush up, but also great to introduce someone to these concepts. Read it for free.

๐Ÿš€ On this 2nd day of #100DaysOfPerf , I'd like to share 2 foundational resources:
๐Ÿ“ 1. Scott Jehl created a fantastic hashtag#webperf course that is now part of the WebPageTest network. You can access it for free:
https://bit.ly/wpt-lfwp
๐Ÿ“ 2. The team @ Web/Dev also released a course more recently. You can also access that course for free.

๐Ÿ“ Both provide magnificent material from subject matter experts. Perfect esp for those who are newer. ENJOY!

๐Ÿ“ข Presenting: โœจ100 Days Of Web Performanceโœจ
๐Ÿ“ For the next 100 days, I'm inviting #webperf fans/connoisseurs to post content about web performance, something I've always wanted to do. There are many reasons, but the main? Community literacy.
๐Ÿ“ For the next 100 days, not only will I also share content, but I'll be back streaming w/ some of the great content I launched in the past (that I've been poked about, so thank you! ๐Ÿ™ƒ), but also so BIGGER announcements. join me! ๐Ÿš€
