BSFL treats!!
The Black Soldier Larvae are good about climbing up into and around the lid to the composter. Almost every morning, when I take the kitchen waste なまごみ out I can grab some for the hens. It's good to keep some of the hens into the habit of eating out of the hand for when visitors want to get a close up look... If you have the time you can get the chicks used to being handled, but it's not bad to simply appreciate animals from an appropriate distance..

I promised to show some of the cute little 幼虫 larvae to some people in class. Of the 5 or 10 I mentioned it too, 1 or 2 may be sincerely positive about a larvae visit. Our educational systems are not doing a good job fomenting a "Sense of Wonder" in a general sort of way. I took some in last year. It's surprising to see who run-away frightened and who can work up the courage to take a close look, or even touch these healthy little critters. Biwa the SilkyHen came into class once: for learning "...come through the window.. come into the room.." I should try something like that again, generates interesting drawings: Might be able to work chickens into the lessons for "go" and "come"..

Irritated with myself for getting some BSFL into a yogurt container all ready to go to class and then forgetting them. Oh well,,, maybe next week. The hens get to eat the BSLF in the evening regardless..

Door Front Egg Delivery..

I think I made her nervous walking in and out the front door getting ready to work the wood pile. It seems rare for the bird to stand up over their egg just looking around like this. It was nice that she didn't give up on laying here where it is most convenient...

It's nice when the hens lay in a convenient box, not one where I'm wishing I did Yoga while drying to fish the eggs out from the back of a long box on the ground. One of the hens that provided a door-front egg-delivery went broody so I moved her whole tray into an wooden apple box under the eaves. It's nice to see a young hen choosing this door-front convenient box after 3 or 4 have chosen the yoga box. I was in a rush to drive the hour into Miyazaki City for the _No Other Land_ documentary and snapped these photos while the settled hen was complaining. She was making a noise that would be hard to mistake for anything other than displeasure. But, the seems to have worked it out, by the time I got back in the evening there were two eggs in the box. Nice! We've never gotten so many Silky eggs as we've been getting lately. We finally have enough laying hens around (in additon to the two broodies) to be able to eat and egg or two every day while giving some away too.. Silkies tend not to lay every day, and ten to go broody a lot so raising them is not something to do if your aim is efficient egg production.. The Nagoya Cochin seemed to lay more often, but they were mean to the quail (ate the babies, tossed the adults!!) and the disabled Silky too.. It was good to had the Cochin off to someone that had a more serious enclosure, those beautiful birds are too athletic and outgoing so they wreak havoc in the neighbor's gardens... Silkies are nice a bit more relaxing, no need to worry about kids getting attacked by them, or that they'll kill one of their disabled peers, or that they will be too proactive about escaping into neighbors' gardens..

Door Front Egg Delivery!!
It's nice when they take to laying eggs someplace convenient.
The other place requires yoga poses to fish three eggs out from the back of a long box.. I finally left a long wooden spoon out there so it goes smoother. The convenient box out there is now taken up by a broody hen.. Now we got 4 little chicks and two broody hens sitting on who knows how many eggs. There hasn't been much trouble finding people who want to raise them so we should be doing fine..

It felt like this hen was giving the evil eye, or just being judgmental...

Maron the Shiba almost ate a hen yesterday. The hen didn't seem to mind as much as you'd think she should, maybe they were just playing and I misunderstood.. but... look at that face, the photo with the feather on her nose and the one with the tongue on her nose... Looks guilty, right? I'm guessing it was lucky as left the chainsaw work to go in and get the ax right then so that I noticed Maron on the white Silky with white feathers scattered all around. Usually Maron is good about ignoring them.. Maybe just when she's in her usual spot or with me, when she is somewhere else she gets confused and thinks they are meals like sparrows or pigeons.. We want her to chase crows away but I wonder if it's all a bit complex for her... Hopefully I just misunderstood her intentions but she killed a mid-sized chick that hurried her way while tied up in this same spot by the wood piles...

This chick almost got eaten yesterday. I was rushing to upload some photos and videos^1 of a fun Town event but the birds were raising a raucous(?). So I peeked out the window and they were all near where the dog (Maron) was tied to the wood pile frame. I was worried and angry that maybe Maron had grabbed one of them, but also wondering why they were still hanging out by her.. So I moved Maron back the corner by her doghouse and sleeping pillow. But he birds kept making a racket. So I peer out he window again and there's a big white-with-big-orange-spots can on a garden rock stalking Biwa the hen and her little chick. Biwa can be a tough one and she was between the cat and the chick.. Big heavy Pear the rooster is more of a lover than a fighter. But Biwa being brave in front of the window like that got me outside throwing old pomelos at the cat before it ate the chick... Street cats are a menace. For one week we were losing a chick or two a day to Street cats, one in the morning and one in the evening sometimes. We thought it was a crow or weasel until the killer made off with one of the mangled adult hens and a neighbor told me where he last saw it. I was able to get over that house's wall soon enough to see the light go out of Mangle One's eyes. Street Cats are a menace, and invasive species,, great cute working animals but they should be kept inside with all their cuteness...
