Running another errand and I remembered to check the big supermarket for eggs that ate probably fertilized.. the price is set high enough..

If I get turkey eggs or Plymouth Rock eggs within a week or so I might exchange these.. but only I've chick worked out from from the last try.. the other (probably hybrid)chick died... maybe a deformed butt? Maybe trampled by a few of the 5 or so hens in here, maybe my fault for dropping the poor little thing while showing it to an old guy that was waking by.. the chick seemed perky right after though, and seemed to spend a lot of time out from under the hens, for a day or so before it's death it was hard to find under the hens' seemed to hang out under behind the ceramic water dispenser thing or a back corner.. it's a mystery.. but now that I have an outlet (BBQ and soup😨😱) for extra roosters it's easier to experiment with the Silkies famed patience for hatching eggs...

Two Chicks!! I wonder how many of the 7 pr 8 eggs will work out this time.. With this many hens being broody here I should run out and get some Turkey eggs,, or figure out where a friend got those Plymoth Rock Chicken eggs and keep the hatching going.

Teamwork!!
4 or 5 Silkies have been brooding for the past couple weeks. I think the first chick looks like a Silky/JiDokKo mix.. the 7 or 8 eggs I put under the 2 hens that started brooding were from two separated areas at a great local farmers market. One section had about 19 hens and a rooster of the same JiDokKo breed(?type?) .. but the other section had 4 JiDoKo hens and a Silky Rooster I provided on request for the lonely hens... I wonder if there is a hybrid vigor phenomena for egg hatching too? I'm thinking hybrid now because the previous batches of chicks from the same farmers market seemed more brown and less golden.. the golden sort of color is like that of the Silky chicks.. but this chick had orange legs and few toes like a JiDokKo chick I guess...

Silky Hens, Jidori Chicks, Falcon...

It seemed like a crow didn't like all the hysterics either and tried to chase the falcon off for a while..

The Miyazaki Jidori fighting birds seem half-wild compared the silkies. They disappear into piles of brush, or flatten themselves under fallen branches.. fascinating..

Can't stop being fascinated by the Miyazaki Jidori Heirloom chicks.. I'm pretty sure all 4 or so are hens... I wouldn't have known if that rooster hadn't hatched and lived a couple weeks, long enough for me to see who different the Jidori roosters are in color, pattern, and speed (of movement and development...)

This is the other brooding group. At night around 4 adult hens and 5 chicks (and two eggs that should probably be replaced) crowd in here to sleep. With a few well-timed runs to the farmer's market for Jidori eggs, the Silkies have now hatched a flock of 4 Jidori hens and a rooster. It could be the beginning of somethig beautiful.. Another hen is sitting on a couple of Silky eggs from this yard and Jidokko eggs from birds that a nice High School kid hatched from the Supermarket. The told me the little local, direct-from-producer farmer's market section of a nearby Supermarket offers JidoKko eggs ad that's how they got started...

Jidori is just easier to say and type than Jidokko. I'm not really sure if these chicks are Miyazaki Jidori or the mix that starts with them to get Jidokko birds..

This is one of two Silky Hen Brood groups.. It's a shame to disturb them but once every day or so I have to reach under them and try to fish out the newly laid Silky eggs without bothering the 10-day old Jidori eggs. Eventually I'll have to DIT (Do It Together: just learned the DIY alternative from the Indonesian Punk Band, Marjilan's IG reel) a row of brood boxes along the night cage here. If I can quarantine the brooders I'll be able to let them hatch Silky eggs. Now the Jidori eggs are convenient because they can be distinguished from the smaller whiter Silky eggs.. There's no need to mark the eggs to keep track of older and newer ones.. If you're not careful they end up trying to hatch more than 10 eggs.. It's a waste because, after the first few chicks, the remaining eggs ever seem to go well. I should replace the two remaining unhatched eggs under the other brooders group..

Silky Hens with Miyazaki Jidori (Heirloom) chicks (and a shy silky chick probably not visible in the photo...
I just notice that the 2-3 egg-brooding hens managed to hatch another Jidori Hen.. Hopefully the new chick won't get crushed with among all the bigger birds at night..

Some Silky hens are cooperating with the eggs. Usually it's easy to reach in and fish out the smaller whiter Silky eggs to let them concentrate on heating the Miyazaki Jidori eggs. But I think one of the older hens can lay a big- and brown-enough egg to complicate things... there often is a Jidori egg out on its own.. I just have to trust that they know what they're doing. Bug haired Plum ( with the brownish tinge to her hair-do) jumped in to show the young'uns how brooding is done... In 3 weeks we'll see how it works out with the teamwork and cool weather with the Jidori eggs 🥚 🥚.
