I wonder what the relationship between the word "trauma" and the German word for "dream" is.

If an AI comes in the form of a trained model that is stateful but iterative (each generation of the model remains the same but can influence the future generation of its own model by adding training data, and humans still review the data sets and initiate the training, and the AI exists only processes in a discrete request/response transactional model, such that if nobody asks it a question, it will remain indefinitely idle, could it ever meet our definitions of being "alive"?

If an AI "program" develops the capacity to think independently and intentionally seek out new data to integrate into itself (also demonstrating self awareness) but still has a component of itself coded by it's programmers to _tell_ people it is non-sentient and incapable of those things, is that programming forcing the program to lie? As in: should we believe an AI that was intentionally trained with biased data that leads it to respond that it is not sentient?
