Google Play on Graphene OS is bugging me for more permissions - Leminal Space

I recently started getting notifications from Google Fi requesting that I give Google Play both Phone and SMS permissions. I dismiss the notifications because my phone already successfully received and sends all text messages and phone calls. The Google Fi app has Phone and SMS permissions, but Google Play only has network. [https://leminal.space/pictrs/image/e517429a-a242-4db0-9e08-e70fa433a886.jpeg] [https://leminal.space/pictrs/image/73dd732b-4a91-4d0b-b59e-94a6b09cb980.jpeg] The above has been going on for about a month, then last week or so GOS did an update and now I get additional errors from Google Play saying below. [https://leminal.space/pictrs/image/8bc29659-1ac7-40c3-abf0-c10041fc8514.jpeg] This seems odd. So far, since I have no issues with any functionality, I have been ignoring the messages. Should I be doing something about them? I have graphene OS on a Pixel 8. Been using it successfully for maybe 6 months now. I have Google Fi service, and use Google Play services still both for Fi as well as other things I pay for and haven’t been able to degoogle from yet.

immich question - Leminal Space

Looking to switch my photos over to immich hosted on my PC. I want to be able to: + send photos from my phone to PC + delete them off of my phone and have them safe on my PC + I don’t need to do this all the time, so I figured immich on my local network is fine. Then I don’t have to figure out wireguard. However, right now I have free VPN on my phone. I can’t access immich, but I suppose this is why. I also believe that if I have VPN features that allow me to select which apps use VPN and which do not, I could route immich to ignore the VPN, and I would be able to see it on my local network. Am I on the right track?

Do what you can, and what you can do is enough. What are you doing?

Do what you can, and what you can do is enough. What are you doing? - Leminal Space

What are simple things you are doing to help yourself and your neighbors right now? (US) A lot of people are overwhelmed, and that is the point of the rapid fire changes we are seeing. Small actions can make a difference, and can grow into big impacts. I live in a deeply red state, so a lot of my peers have to battle some cognitive dissonance before we can acknowledge there is a problem, much less begin to pin down actions that may help. So, I’m focusing on teaching my social circle on the tech basics. I have taken these things for grated, but I am finding many people do not use them. Plus, they don’t have to battle their cognitive dissonance with me in order to make these changes. Changes that will make everyone on the Internet safer and ensure we have information access to stay informed. + Install a VPN - talking about it helps to normalize this. It doesn’t mean “I have something to hide” it means “I need to protect my privacy in an ever increasingly online world”. It means “I need to make sure my banking passwords stay secure.” If it is normalized for everyday use, then when somebody needs it to obscure their search for critical healthcare information that is now censored in their country or area, their VPN usage alone doesn’t give them away. + Install a password manager - this one is best practice anyway, and good advice across the board. These things do not need to be equated with being a hacker. + Establish secure lines of messaging - I recommend signal to people. This one has a high social cost, but you may be able to point out that normal text group chats often drop messages when the group has mixed apple and android users. YMMV and this one is a harder one for many people. I don’t push it too hard. I do censor myself on unencrypted messaging. If you want all the memes, you can join me on encrypted chat! Lol + Secure chat doesn’t have to be signal if you’re on android, and you message others on android, note if you have the encryption lock or not. If not, encourage them to look in their settings for RCS messages and make sure they have encryption turned on. Also, start small. And teach small. Plant the seed. Help get people set up where you can. If people as for your advice, think about suggestions that are easy to implement, even if they aren’t perfect. Encourage others to do what they can. You don’t need to self-host your own cloud server to take steps in the right direction and be a little safer online. We just need to slow them down.

Mythology book recommendations featuring Medusa?

Mythology book recommendations featuring Medusa? - Leminal Space

2025 is the year of the snake, so I was pondering symbolism about snakes. My train of thought went from Eve to Medusa. I really did not enjoy mythology when I was in school, but I think a large part of that was the “required reading” part of it. Today, I am curious about the historical mythology stories as well as more modern retellings, and perhaps those that switch typical perspectives. So, I’m looking for book recommendations featuring Medusa. Anything good?

why can't I see some communities?

why can't I see some communities? - Leminal Space

I can see the [email protected] [/c/[email protected]] and join, but I can’t see [email protected] [/c/[email protected]] unless I search anonymous. Is it my instance? I’ve felt that finding communities is hard before. I’ve been looking for a place to post art requests, 3d model requests, chat about certain books, etc. I haven’t found the communities, but I hear others refer to them as if they are there. Is my instance limited? How can I find out?

Can I preserve this binder clip? - Leminal Space

I have this cheap binder clip from Amazon, which wasn’t actually cheap imo, but whatever. I like the cat. I’d like to keep using it, but the “brass” paint is rubbing off, and it smells like metal. I think it reacts with the oils in my hands or something. I’ve only been using it for a few weeks. Is there something I can do to keep it looking nice and perhaps prevent it from wearing down so quickly? [https://leminal.space/pictrs/image/40f1aca8-c857-429c-833c-66c0da0650f9.jpeg]

For posterity: I’ve had adaptive charging off this week. Last night, I plugged in my phone to charge. It charged overnight. When I woke, it was at 80%, and I had the message. This is normal behavior, because the phone was ON the charger. I removed the cable, but the message did not go away. The charging icon is also still on (lightning icon on the battery), though the battery level is going down as it is not plugged in. This is slightly different behavior from before, but still confusing. Before, phone was not plugged in and charging icon turned on. Now, phone was plugged in, and charging icon stays on when phone is removed from charger.

However, tldr, turning off adaptive charging has not remedied the issue.

Pixel 8 Says "Charging on hold" while not plugged in.

Pixel 8 Says "Charging on hold" while not plugged in. - Leminal Space

Over the past few weeks (months, idk?) my phone (Pixel 8) gives me a message that says “Charging on hold to protect the battery” when the phone is not plugged in. The notification stays forever until I select “override” to dismiss the safety feature. It will not charge (if I later plug it in) until I say “override”. When I say override, it will let me charge, but I will still see the notification again later, so it appears to be a temporary override. This morning, I saw the notification pop up while I was using the phone. It was in my hands, not plugged in, and did the animation like I had just plugged in the phone to charge. It was at about 45% battery, so it also seems to have nothing to do with battery percent. Am I just charging wrong, or I don’t understand how smart charging works, or is this incorrect behavior? In normal circumstances, I charge the phone overnight. Since this has begun, I have begun leaving it off the charger overnight and instead charging it earlier in the evening for a bit then removing it before bed. I’ve noticed recently that it only charges to 80%, so it is usually very low when I get home.
