Yes, that's also what I heard.
As a kid, I loved a lot of designs that looked cool and futuristic, but (unbeknownst to me) were not really practical. I never saw the 116 back then, but I *loved* the look of the plus/4 and its impractical arrow "keys". (Somehow even worse than the C64's two arrow keys!) I saw one in a store and saved all of my money to buy one, but (perhaps lucky for me) it had been discontinued by then, so I eventually got a Commodore 128 instead.
I also thought the Atari 400 looked way cooler than the Atari 800. Perhaps I would have felt differently if I actually has regular access to any of these machines. I bet typing on an Atari 400 would be torture
While I still appreciate the look of these machines, my "daily-driver" keyboard is a hideous but ergonomic Kinesis Advantage.
