As always, it's essential to be reminded #accessibility matters. Technologies are here to help, such as the open-source library github.com/mitvis/olli

And if your audience reads right to left, then make sure your charts do to, or at very least ensure consistency across your piece.

That's it for me, I've already shared a few images in my previous posts and just need to pray not too many videos of my Scottish dance attempts will surface here 😜 #professionalcredibility

1 exhibition, 2 hours of Scottish dances, and 40 talks in just 3 days: summarising last week's Information+ Conference in Edinburgh (#infoplus2023) is no easy feat but I'll do my best!

I had a fantastic time trying out #scrollytelling for the first time and reflecting on the important role of data visualisation in starting conversations and creating impact.

I was particularly struck by the potential of data physicalisation to transform societies.

The EU Data Visualisation Guide was published last month

https://data.europa.eu/apps/data-visualisation-guide/

I wrote all the content for it, and I built the interactive publication in @sveltejs. It has 7 chapters and contains a ton of examples. You can search it for a topic, or use it as a guided course and browse from page to page. It basically condenses all I learned about data visualization in the past decade

Data Visualisation Guide

Key takeaways from @InfoPlusConf

1. Edinburgh is a beautiful city
2. Learning Scottish dances on the spot is a lot of fun
3. Boy, I missed visualization conferences!

It's impossible to summarize all the inspiration and deep thought processes I went through during the keynotes, talks, and many conversations, and I will feed off them for a while.

Thanks so much for organizing this wonderful event @uta_ente & @benjbach and everyone else who was involved. Looking forward to the next time!!!

what i also really liked about #infoplus2023 was that many presenters shared various materials making it easy to reuse these for teaching, research and practice.

some recurring themes in my notes:
- vis co-design is expanding to involve formerly excluded people
- there is a growing interest in improving the accessibility of vis
- critical recognition of historically suppressed voices in our data
- people can (and do) acquire data and vis literacy at many academic stages
- digital tech is optional: the natural/physical world is full of data
- sound and speech can complement visualizations
- there is a growing concern for work-life balance

#infoplus2023

it might not be apparent from the posts here, but #infoplus2023 was a blast of inspiring presentations and lively conversations! thank you, Uta, Ben and the whole @InfoPlusConf team for making us feel so welcome in Edinburgh!

not sure if i am getting too old for live-posting or if it was the jam-packed program (probably both), but there was a lot of good things to take in: from workshops and presentations to the exhibition and socials…

Farewell @InfoPlusConf!! So many great talks, conversations, designers & thinkers!! Very sad😔 to be leaving, but so happy 😁 to have met / reconnected with such a great group of people!! 👋 Long live #dataviz !!
