Mexico's armed forces sent troops, vehicle convoys and soldiers into remote towns near the southern border with Guatemala, after drug cartels blocked roads and cut off electricity in some areas over the weekend. The drug cartel turf battles were so bad in the southern state of Chiapas that some government workers had to be flown in by helicopter to repair power lines. A combined force of about 800 soldiers, National Guard officers and police fanned out around the township of Frontera Comalapa Wednesday, after videos surfaced over the weekend of a convoy of heavily-armed gunmen from the Sinaloa cartel rolling into one town, drawing cheers from some inhabitants.

Rising poverty grips Argentina as runaway inflation takes its toll

Homeless shelters in Argentina's capital are seeing demand soar as more people are struggling to make ends meet amid an annual inflation rate above 100% that is pushing more people into poverty. The government's statistics agency said Wednesday that 40.1% of Argentines are living in poverty. That is up from 39.2% in the second half of 2022. For much of the 20th century, Argentina showed a social mobility dynamic that gave rise to a large middle class and made the country stand out in the region. This century, however, poverty has remained firmly above 25% as the South American country is mired in an economic malaise.

As migration surges in Americas, 'funds simply aren't there' for humanitarian response, UN says

Countries in the Americas are reeling as the flow of migrants reaches historic levels, but a U.N. officials says international “funds simply aren’t there” for humanitarian needs. Ugochi Daniels of the International Organization for Migration says a larger and coordinated regional effort is necessary for a longer term solution to the steady movement of vulnerable people toward the United States. But she says other global crises — among them the war in Ukraine, conflict in Sudan, Morocco’s earthquake — have pulled global funds away. The flood of migrants to the Mexico-U.S. border has swelled in recent years and is overwhelming Latin American governments, many of which lack the funds to take care of their own citizens.

Hitmen, kidnappers, and robbers roam the streets of Ecuador

Ecuador used to be one of Latin America's most peaceful nations. Today, criminals prowl relatively wealthy and working-class neighborhoods alike. There are professional hitmen, kidnappers, extortionists and thousands of thieves and robbers. Mexican and Colombian cartels have settled into coastal cities and grabbed chunks of the trade shipping hundreds of millions of dollars in cocaine from neighboring Peru and Colombia to consumers overseas. One of the candidates in a special Aug. 20 presidential election had a famously tough stance on organized crime and corruption. Fernando Villavicencio was fatally shot in broad daylight Wednesday despite a security detail that included police and bodyguards.

South Korea’s president has called for deeper security cooperation with the U.S. and Japan to address North Korean nuclear threats, saying his upcoming summit with the U.S. and Japanese leaders at Camp David will “set a new milestone in trilateral cooperation.” President Yoon Suk Yeol made the comments Tuesday in a speech marking the 78th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japan’s 35-year colonial rule in 1945. Yoon says South Korea, the U.S. and Japan must closely cooperate on reconnaissance assets and share North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missiles data in real time.

Advocates sue federal government for failing to ban imports of cocoa harvested by children

Child welfare advocates have filed a federal lawsuit asking a judge to force the Biden administration to block imports of cocoa harvested by children in West Africa that ends up in America’s most popular chocolate desserts and candies. The lawsuit filed Tuesday, which was brought by International Rights Advocates, seeks to have the federal government enforce a 1930s era federal law that requires the government to ban products created by child labor from entering the U.S. The nonprofit group says it filed the suit because Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security have ignored extensive evidence documenting children cultivating cocoa destined for well-known U.S. candy makers.

Argentine peso plunges after rightist who admires Trump comes first in primary vote

The Argentine peso plunged Monday after a 52-year-old anti-establishment candidate who admires former President Donald Trump came first in primary elections that will help determine the country’s next president. Javier Milei rocked Argentina’s political establishment Sunday by receiving the biggest share of primary votes for presidential candidates in the October general election to determine who leads a nation battered by economic woes. Milei wants to replace the peso with the dollar. He says that Argentina’s Central Bank should be abolished, and that he thinks climate change is a lie. He has characterized sex education as a ploy to destroy the family, has said that he believes the sale of human organs should be legal, and it should be easier for Argentines to own handguns.
