Originally, Kovu was Scar's bio kid, born just after Scar died
They had always wanted a Kiara/Kovu romance
They forgot that Scar was Simba's uncle. Making Kovu Simba's cousin & Kiara's cousin once removed.
They were half way through production before someone was like. Hey.... Uhh... Wait...
So they had to make it into "he's Scar's heir but not his kid."
But it was way too late to get rid of the color palate they were using to signal "Kovu is Scar's kid"
