All opinions are, regrettably, my own.
@jpm do you need a wood lathe?!
Thread lock did not stop the extender slipping.
It seems slightly better than before, but still coming loose.
What are your welding skills like @Kels_316 ?
Ok, new thread.
This morning I have fucked around with (fake $2 shop) loctite. Tomorrow I will find out.

Ok. All removed again and examined, and it appears I may* have put zinc rich primer inside the tube when I was painting it.

*Definitely did.

The bolt undid a bit too easily. Guess I'll make it tighter ..
Apparently this extender isn't gripping inside the steerer tube, so as soon as I start riding, the headset gets slop in it. Hopefully its just a matter of cleaning and tightening it... 😬
Shiny new threadless stem vs old quill stem.
Yes I know the spacers aren't shiny. I have new ones on the way though because I didnt realise there were some I could use on a donor bike.
Also turns out my painting skills need some work...
So here's the fork steerer tube with the extender on top. You can see the threads have seen better days.
The extender has an expanding bung which fits down into the tube, and you then tighten it (to 10 NM).
Done. Now to assemble the rest of it.
In related news, fingers are great for gauging gap size, until they're hit with a hammer.
