Right, that site gives the option to view either instances or communities. Select communities, then follow my original instructions. It sorts greatest to smallest but you can cycle through pages with the "next" button and quickly go to the end, accomplishing your goal.
Not sure how new it is.. I've been using it a few days. It is a search tool for both instances and communities.
Use https://lemmyverse.net/communities and type in lemmy.world in the search bar. then sort by subscribers.

looks like OP is not one of the devs of this site. You should forward this idea to the github page that is linked there, as it's a great idea.
Sadly, many people I have recommended it to have acted like it was the most difficult thing in the world to understand. The initial learning curve really wasn't that bad, IMO but it seems like a lot of people want to be spoon fed.
